heart burn

I am about 24 weeks and I am having horrible heart burn. I bought Tums and they seem to work only temporarily. Is there anything else I can do or take to relieve this? Thanks!Chat Icon

Re: heart burn

The same thing happens to me...short term relief...I brought it up to 2 different Dr's in my practice and they both told me that Tums are safe b/c they are just Calcium, and that I basically can't take too many Tums...but they didn't really recommend anything else...

When its really bad, I have a little cereal...the milk helps I think...and of course, I just keep eating Tums...

Zantac 150 was my best friend throughout my entire pregnancy. Try and keep a log of what you eat and drink and see when you feel the worst. Pretzels and bagels helped me..

Gaviscon helps me a lot. It's a little expensive but, it's liquid gold! It also helps faster if you keep it in the fridge.

Re: heart burn

I take a zantac daily and it keeps things under control. I only take the 75 and if I get break through heartburn late in the evening I can pop 2 tums.

Re: heart burn

Liquid Maalox has been my lifesaver.. along with altering my diet.

Here is my list to limit as per my dr.:
Sauces
Spices
High fat dairy and fried foods

It really helped!

I try Tums but they dont seem to help me...

I have bad heartburn too and tums don't seem to work, they just give a little relief. The only thing that helps me is if I have something really cold like dairy...ice cream or a smoothie.

Re: heart burn

When I have mild heart burn, almonds help. The other night I ate greasy food and felt like I had a knife in my esophagus. The almonds only helped a little for a few minutes. I drank milk and that worked.

I take Zantac as well. I would try the milk, I am afraid it will upset my stomach - sometimes I think I am lactose intolerant.

Chew gum! That helps. Also they say mint can exaccerbate the problem so I stick to fruit flavored gum.

Re: heart burn

I take a pepcid ac every single night with my prenatal.

i take tums as needed and drink milk as well.

if i get heartburn during the day i take a 2nd pepcid ac... along with the tums and milk.

the combo does the trick for me.

i have MAJOR heartburn issues too... stemming from when i was a teen and so far that combo is actually working... i'm surprised!! thought i KNOW if i missed a pill.. it takes me a few days to get back on track with minimizing the heartburn.
