Designer labels

One of my biggest pet peeves in certain people when it comes to fashion is the ones who will only buy something if its made by a famous designer.

I walked into work this morning and someone said... "Nice Bag!.. Who makes it??" Its a CD bag, but, did it really matter?

Or the best was.. when I showed my friend a shirt from my closet to see if she liked it (for a party we were going to). She looked at it as if she wasn't crazy about it - like as if she didn't like it. Then she asked me who makes it.... I told her the designer & then all of a sudden she said " Oh YES.. Thats HOT!"

I dont get the whole label thing. If something is nice... Why should it matter who makes it?Chat Icon

Re: Designer labels

i have NO idea about labels.

who is CD? Chat Icon Chat Icon

i base my fashion tastes on how things look. that means i might gravitate towards certain stores but i don't have $$ so i don't care a bit about designers.

i see people post expensive things on here all the time and i have to hold myself back from saying "ew" because it's just not my style (ok in some cases i think designer things are ugly, but so are a lot of non-designer iterms).

Re: Designer labels

Personally I only buy things I like.
That could be a $19 bag from Target or a more expensive designer bag that I happen to like. (But I have my limits on what I will spend on a bag or shoes or any clothing item- with a mortgage to pay and a savings acct to pad, my priorities are a lot different)
And I will proudly announce where one of my cheapy items is from if someone asks.
I don't care about impressing ANYONE excpet myself....

Re: Designer labels

I think labels/designer goods can sometimes equate to a consistent quality and style to their items.

I buy what I like regardless of whether it's a high end label or not, but there are certain design houses where I know I'm going to LOVE pretty much whatever they put out. (If I had the money, I'd be wearing Loro Piana, Escada, St. John all the time. Chat Icon ) I tend to love Stuart Weitzman shoes, so I automatically look to see what he has out each season (I love a lot of other designers, but they don't make my size, so I don't waste my time.)

If someone is wearing a piece that I like, I just compliment them. If it's a piece I think I may recognize (whether it's from the fabric, overall design or some other aspect), I may ask "is it (insert designer here)?" If they tell me "no, Target!" then even better! Chat Icon

I know when I'm asked where I got a piece of my wardrobe, I feel better telling people about the cheaper pieces and more awkward about the pricier ones. Online is the only place where I really "show-off" my purchases, otherwise I want my clothes and accessories to look good on me, not be the focus.

I do the same thing. I match up my LV, and my MJ sungalsses with a dress from Forever21!
It works.

Re: Designer labels

what gets me are those who ONLY have better brand things and act like they are all high and mighty o ver it, yet they charge up a storm or dont make any more $ than i do but act like its so great that they have quality stuff.

I could have that too, i just choose to save my money for more important things

Ive never owned a designer hangbag or shoes. I just cant imagine spending $500+ on one item. JMO
sorry, edited for crappy typing

Re: Designer labels

I wonder the same thing-I have a mix of stuff in my closet-some is designer, some is stuff I picked up at Target! Quality is quality and if something looks good, who cares who makes it-I have seen gorgeous stuff at my favorite cheapie store Forever 21 and hideous stuff they show me when I go into Saks!

Me too! I wore a Forever 21 strapless maxi dress last year to an outdoor wedding with Moschino sandals, Chanel sunglasses and a MJ clutch-I got more compliments on my dress than the bride! And no one said a word about the accessories! I love to mix it up!

Re: Designer labels

even when I wear designer items- I most likely didn't pay full price for them

I love the thrill of the hunt-- it's rare that I pay full price- and I am always happy to tell people where I find stuff

That's just silly. If you don't like something, you don't like it--no matter what designer says it's high fashion!

When I shop I will tend to buy certain brands, b/c I like Chatham-Chick says, you can usually count on the fit & quality, but none of it is high-end by any means. I think the brand I am most loyal too is Hush Puppies! Chat Icon

I hate it. Some people are just like that . I personally don't care about labels much . I wear whatever looks good on me and whatever is comfortable. I buy designers (not full price any more since I'm a SAHM now) and I buy things at Target or other "cheaper" stores. I think people who are all about big designers and labels have some self esteem problems. Chat Icon

Re: Designer labels

Is jcrew considered designer, cause that's about as high-end as I get! and I usually only get stuff on sale there. Since I'm tall, I shop for clothes where items fit me- J.crew, Zara are my staples. For one/two season fun clothes- I live out of Forever 21 and H&M. I love how I can get a bunch of stuff but not spend alot. I am not a spender, so shopping for me is bitter sweet and I feel guilty after, even though I only shop for clothes maybe 5-6 times a year. It's just not a priority in my life.

I never got the designer thing, I can find something just as cute (maybe not better quality) for a fraction of the cost! Alot of designer stuff can be trendy too, so spending that much on a one season item is crazy to me. But if you've got the money to pay for it, than to each his own!

Re: Designer labels

I buy what I like and could care less who makes it. That said, I often ask people where they got something or who makes it - it's b/c I want it! Maybe that is why they are asking - they like it and want it for themselves?

Re: Designer labels

I personally could care less.

I get more complements on things I buy from Forever 21 then anything else in my closet.

I dont have enough disposable income to splurge on expensive items- especially after having a baby.

What I find completely obnoxious is that Ed Hardy's tank tops are like $80 a piece! I dont get it.

If you can afford it & buying designer items makes you happy- go for it!!
