Actually my argument is to spell it Callan and pronounce it Kahl-en-he thinks 1 L will be pronounced the same way but I am telling him no-as you proved with your post-however he is from upstate NY and gets irritated how "we Long Islanders" pronounce everything phonetically. Oh you mean the CORRECT way

I would pronounce the 1 "l" like kay-len. With 2 "l's", I would pronounce cal-len.

I would say Kay-lan. If it were 2 lls I would say Kah-lan (like cat).
Usually (not always but usually), vowel preceding one consanant has a long sound, vowel preceding a double consanent has a short sound. I'm totally trying to come up with examples and I'm blanking.
