I hate, hate, hate when I see stores open on Thanksgiving.
ETA: Or any holiday for that matter.

I'm 29 and I don't think all stores were closed on Sundays during my lifetime. 
it probably depends on where you grew up - i know that on LI some towns' stores still all close on sundays, although most don't.
I'm 31 & grew up on LI, and I don't remember stores being closed on Sunday. Actually, my father worked a 2nd job in TSS on Sundays in the early 80's.
I remember it pretty much like it is now, with just small stores like the dry cleaners being closed on Sundays.
ETA- I just saw that Tilde said she grew up in Queens.
That may explain it-- I think in my grandparents neighborohood in Brooklyn things made have been closed on Sunday--it was more old school in parts of the burroughs.

honestly, i don't think that having to work for a few hours on a holiday is so horrible. of course its less than ideal, but i dont "hate" the concept of it. Such is life.

I worked for Kmart in high school . They were open I usually worked cause I got extra money. I LOVED when people would come in and say this is horrible you are open on Thanksgiving but THERE they were shopping  
I worked for K mart in Highschool too. I know exactly what you mean. All the customers would say, sorry that you have to work on Thanksgiving, but THEY were the reason we had too!
K-mart is open every day of the year expect Christmas and for normal business hours, they don't close early on holidays.

Personally, I don't see the big deal about being open on Thanksgiving. I mean, what does one do during the day of thanksgiving? We cook- and I guess some people watch football and travel to wherever you are going. Other than that, what else? I can't tell you how many times I have gone to the supermarket on Thanksgiving day.
Its not like a religious holiday where people are in church or temple. I told DH that if he wanted to he should work (he has his own business) nad I may do some work from home that day. I just don't see the big deal about it, as long as you are home for Thanksgiving Day dinner.

I guess since I don't spend anytime with family that I don't see the rest of the year, it isn't a big deal to me. My family is small and close. I see my sister every week at my mom every 2 weeks. The only family traveling a distance are my sister's inlaws who live in Phili and they get together every month. Frankly, I don't need to spend the day with them. The pre-dinner hang out and dinner is enough for me.
But I see your point for people who only see thier family on Thanksgiving.

I might be dating myself, but when I was a kid, no stores were open on New Years Day. Now it's a HUGE sale day.
times have really changed.
I guess the only thing left is Christmas Day. lets see how long that lasts

you are very lucky then!! i see my sister every week but rarely see my brother or cousins ( even though we all live close ) so i look forward to just hanging around with them before during and after dinner
we all live within 20 minutes of each other so we SHOULD see eachother weekly. . . but THAT never works out!
i look forward to holidays so that i can see them for an actual HAPPY occasion - i am even a little sad when we have to go to FH's house for something instead

I am 24 and I remember having to RUN to the bakery to buy bread before noon because that was when they closed on Sundays and that was really the only place open - we always had to go right after church.
I grew up in Queens
I totally remember this too !!! Sunday's were so quiet in the neighborhood and I remember driving up Queens Blvd on Thanksgiving & it being a ghost town.....not anymore

I hear ya. But these days, with 3 little kids between the 2 of us it gets a little chaotic before the meal, for whoever is hosting and cooking, so we just come about an hour before dinner and hang out. Also DH's family is not American and live in another country, so that is not an issue. In fact, his sister is coming in from Alabama ON Thanksgiving and arriving at 7pm so she'll be missing dinner will be over by the kids' bedtime (7:30).

i guess i'm in the minority but i don't hate the concept of stores being open on thanksgiving, or any holiday for that matter. i have to work the holidays so sometimes, it's just like any other day to me... cops, firemen, doctors, nurses etc - their jobs don't get put on hold just because it's a holiday... shouldn't we get to run to the store for our favorite cup of coffee to get us going? or should everything BUT our jobs stop? i understand these store workers have families that they want to see/spend time with etc - they want to enjoy thanksgiving dinner too - but hey, so do i. and if i have to work, i have to work. such is life.
