I am so sorry this happened to you.
My brother and I were robbed in our home in Melville a few years ago. It is such a scary feeling...whether you are home or not. Of course, it sucks being home while it happens.
I felt very unsafe for a long time, I still get paranoid when someone is at my door.
I agree with everyone else....get an alarm...but more importantly....make sure you always turn it on...even when you are home.

I am so sorry It does get better.
Our house was robbed right before we moved in. I literally didn't want to sleep there after we closed.
We live in a development of new construction and apparently it is pretty common. It was definitely an inside job - they knew we were closing later that week and not living there so they came and stole our brand new appliances we had delivered. (washer dryer and lighting fixtures all still in boxes). They actually came back and stole the kitchen cabinets off the wall of another house on my street. 
Anyway, we got a alarm with central station monitoring and motion sensors. I also have 2 attack cats that keep me company 
It was tough in the beginning - just tell yourself thank G0D you and your DH weren't home and you are both safe.

I am so sorry - someone once stole my Sirius radio from my car right outside my house and I felt so violated - I cant imagine how you must feel!!!

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I hope you can feel safe soon.
I wanted to ask if you called the credit bureaus yet? They can put a hold on your credit so if someone tries getting a card in your name, they'll alert you.

I grew up in Merrick, my parents still live there (same house for 25 years). While they've never been robbed, the next door neighbor was and they have had some petty theft (someone stole a bike when the garage door was open, and a power washer that my mom left in the driveway). It can happen anywhere. Im sorry it happened to you.
not sure if this is stated or not - but make sure you get your plice report and you are allowed to add to the police report anything missing you could not remmeber right away.
also what the insurance does not cover can be taken for a loss on your taxes
i did not have insurance when my apratment was robbed so i just took the losson taxes
one thing that i found comforting was to make sure i closed all drawers and closets in the morning - coming home and seeing things opened always made by stomach drop
also make sure all locks are dead bolts - just closing a locke door is not enough - you should always lock a deadbolt as you leave
