Prior to this, I never considered abortion as a form of birth control. But if you wanted to argue on a semantic level, it's silly to call pills, etc. BIRTH control because it's pregnancy control. Whereas abortion is a way of controlling a birth, by ensuring it won't happen.

I think rapes, medical, missed...are in an entirely different category. Not saying for or against, just things happening that you had no say in.

BUT that is YOUR opinion and how YOU view the "ok" reasons to have one...

WHICH is very different and IMO wrong....

I did not say they were ok. I think we were just getting off course. It was about the popularity, I don't think Deb meant, medical, rape, and missed.

But you said that they are put into an "entriely different category" AND you said that someone doesn't have any say in it...which is 1. a judgement as reasons and
2 FALSE....someone raped certainly has the choice whether to have or not have an abortion!

i see the point but i still see BC pills as being exactly what they are called birth control...Yes it is essentially to stop pg, which is still controling birth in the larger sense

Re: Very touchy/sensative/personal Poll

I know quite a few people who have had an abortion - of those, 3 of them have had multiple. With that said, I still don't think abortion is "popular".

I think it's sad that people feel that those who have had an abortion should be "ashamed". As far as I am concerned, abortion is a personal choice - regardless of the reasons behind wanting to get one - where I have no place to pass judgement.

I have four friends that have had an abortion. No one that I know of has had more than one though - or at least they haven't told me if they did. I voted wrong because I said 2 but then I realized there were more.

I know alot of people who have had abortions...all for very different reasons. Its an extremly personal decision....I'm just glad that I never felt the need to make such a decision.

Re: Very touchy/sensative/personal Poll

I don't wish shame upon anyone, I am just surprised that people aren't. I don't want anyone to go through life suffering. My words always get mumbled on here. I was saying I am surprised someone would share that info with another person. That a person has 3 abortions, that would shock me. I am an honest person, and giving my honest opinion. I did not think that 3 abortions was girlfriend talk.

and about grouping the other 3 instances. The thread was on the popularity. I don't know how I feel about medical or raped abortions. I am not getting into it. I just felt like, to me, to compare a girl who has 3 abortions, or someone with a missed abortion, and call them all abortions, something is wrong with that. I am sure the poll was for people you know who have had it, but not including missed abortions.

who made that comparison? I certainly did not put those 2 examples together.

I stated that the term "abortion" does refer to the termination of both viable fetuses as well as dead fetuses.

I did not make a comparison to "the girl who had 3...with the missed abortion"

I have had 6 miscarriages, I CERTAINLY don't walk around saying I had 6 abortions. You know they are very different and shouldn't even be lumped together in an argument.

I understand your point. But, the thread did take the direction that abortion is birth control, abortion is, pregnancy control, abortions done out of medical necessity or rape are STILL abortions...

I am stepping out of this because I find myself making "arguments" that I don't necessarily agree with, but feel obligated to make, just to show the "other side"...and because I feel that feelings are being hurt and I don't think that's right or fair to anyone.

ets: and I find myself becomming the "scape goat" about comparisons that I did not even make...and I'm sorry, but just like a missed abortion isn't a "real" abortion, I don't think an abortion done to save a life or prevent a couple from going through the imminent loss of another baby should be considered a "real" abortion.

Re: Very touchy/sensative/personal Poll

Well, I am going to be the first to say, yes, I have had an abortion. I am obviously posting under a false name, and it's sad that I have to, but I don't need anyone judging me for my decision. I was 18 and the decision was not an easy one. I was dating someone whom I did not see myself being tied to for the rest of my life, and although we used birth control, it is not always 100%. I had just started college and I had my whole life ahead of me. Had I decided to keep the baby, I would have been and unfit parent, and I would still be tied to a man that abused me. That was over ten years ago, and I have never once regretted my decision. Fortunately, I am the only person I know, personally, whom has had an abortion, and I would not wish that difficult decision on anyone. Before I had one, I was one of those people that claimed I was FOR it, but "not if it was me". I'm sure many people do mean that, but for me, it was the best option.

I know it wasn't you, I am sure she is not on this site, and I am sure you are a trusted friend, I am just saying, that to admit to 3 abortions is heavy, and I am shocked people are not ashamed to admit to having 3.

Shame is something that people ASSIGN to situations. It is not an automatic given that people feel SHAME after they do something that others may not agree with. And I think it's sad that you think it's "heavy" to be able to talk to someone you are close with about your personal life and issues. There is NO shame in confiding your problems in a friend. It is far more harmful to keep those things to yourself.

I am sorry I didn't mean to argue with you personally. whan I said "you know" I kinda mean you as in the general population of whoever was reading this.
I really am sorry if you thought I was coming back and attacking you, that was certainly not my intention.

Re: Very touchy/sensative/personal Poll

IMO i do not consider abortion as a form of birth control. i feel that birth control is something that PREVENTS PREGNANCY....
BUT..... i do feel that unfortunatly, some girls are starting more and more to just not use BC and then figure 'ill just get an abortion' and to me that is sick....

I admit it, I used to judge when I heard someone had an abortion b/c of what I grew up hearing from my parents, BUT.... once you are put into a situation where you have to make the choice it 100% completely alters your opinions on it, not that you are Pro-Abortion, but you realize that women who have abortions are not 'bad people' as i used to naively somewhat think.

I will admit it, under my real name that i HAVE had one. It was the HARDEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE IN MY LIFE.... and i will NEVER have one again.
You only hvae a few days to think about it (At least for me, I wouldnt be waiting til I was past the first trimester). And you have to make a decision in a matter of like 2 days.
It is something I often think about as well.
I was ashamed, but in a way I know it was the right thing for me to do... not just for me, but for everyone involved in the equation.

I hope you do not judge me, but it IS the 'abotion subject', so I am expecting it.

As far as friends that have had them. I have one friend that had 2 and two friend that had 1.

But i know more people that are NOT friends that have had some as well.

eta: I am Pro-Choice, but not 'pro-abortion' as many people confuse the two

I give up. I am quite a talker, I talk about everything. However, if I had 3 abortions, I would not go spreading the news. I would only see a therapist. Friends come and go, and I would not want someone knowing I had 3. If they feel no shame, then great. I would feel shame.
