imo, it's rude to make comments about someone's weight when they are thin or PG.

I guess that means its OK to make comments about someone's weight when they are overweight? Chat Icon

I don't think she meant that.

that's the thing...people tend to be more sensitive when the coin is flipped, because many people assume that ALL skinnt people are thrilled to be skinny.

definitely not what i meant. i think most people think its ok to say "you're so skinny, i hate you." and "how much weight have you gained now?" (in a pg contect) but would never think to say, "hey fatso, put down the...." that is what i meant.

see i don't understand what the big deal is about this comment?

I have never been insulted by this or even questioned it...

It's backhanded. Why is it ok for someone to say "You're so skinny, I hate you" but not "You're so fat, I hate you". The person giving the "compliment" could've just said, "Wow, you've got a great figure" or even "Wow, I'd kill to have your figure". But to throw in the "I hate you" part is kind of mean and twisted.

Exactly!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
Since when is "hate" part of a compliment?? It's a way of making the person on the receiving end feel uncomfortable b/c the giver is not comfortable in their own skin. IMO.

A compliment is flattering it should never include the words "hate" - there is nothing feel-good about "hate".

Re: "You're so skinny, I hate you!"

I love this stuff.

the only reason people don't say "you're so fat, I hate you" is b/c very few people WANT to be fat, so it's not a source of jealousy.

Jess, it's a compliment. I usually say 'you're so [insert comment}, you b1tch" and I mean it in the best way.

the only time it's a problem, is if you are sensitve about whatever it is the is commented on.

if you are sick of being called skinny, the comment is going to grate on your nerves, no matter how "nicely" the person meant it.

this shouldn't be a fat skinny debate.

if you are ANYTHING you don't like (fat skinny whatever) you should fix it to the best of your natural genetic ability (or surgically if you prefer, butt implants can work wonders Chat Icon ) or you should accept it, move on, and know that whatever you see, everyone else does too.

That's exactly what it is and my thing is, if you're going to say it like that then just keep it to yourself. I know it's a compliment and they don't really hate me, but I think it bothers me b/c i've heard it a lot from one person in particular here at work.

Would you ever say to someone- oh my God you are SO fat??
So why is it ok to say things about thin people??

Exactly... I mean I know they probably mean it as a compliment, but it really puts me on the spot b/c I can't say the same thing back.

Oh and another thing I get sometimes is "Yea I used to be like you, wait till you pop out a few kids." ***???!! Chat Icon

ETA: Since when does W.T.F get starred out???

my friend gets "you're so white" a lot (she's really pale.) She gets REALLY upset at that comment so I can understand where you're coming from.

Re: "You're so skinny, I hate you!"

I say , " your so skinny , I hate you" all the time to my skinny friends.

If one of them said to me...Well I dont like being thin , I would change my train of thought, but till then, no one I know who is thin, doesnt want to be or at least doesnt say anything to me about it.

Why is it ok to say to a thin person and not a fat one?

BECAUSE Saying I hate you , your so thin is a COMPLIMENT...Why is that hard to understand for some? We are wishing we WERE that person, We dont tell a Fat person we hate them, because we dont want to be fat.

Silly arguement, ALL the " Oh boo hoo, just cause I'm skinny, doesnt mean its not hard etc.... Well no one cares if its hard or easy, BOTTOM LINE is they , WE, People....Want to be skinny and like you, however you obtained it. I would take it as a compliment and move on. ....

That is understood. IMO there is a nicer way of giving that kind of compliment. I just don't like the feeling of not knowing what to say when someone says that to me.

Because it's insensitive ESPECIALLY when people are telling you that it bothers them. Why should I get over myself instead? Why shouldn't other people just think before they speak?

Telling a thin person that no one cares how hard it is for them is the same as saying that to a fat or chubby person. It's rude, to say the least.

Im not that deep?

If Someone said that what I intended as a compliment WASNT, Then I would gladly and whole heartedly apologize for it and understand.

I think the fact its "Acceptable" ( ie...said often) in society is because its seen as a compliment.

When I SAY it, thats how I mean it, but of course I would never want anyones feelings hurt or to feel awkward....But on the other side of the coin, some people DO like when this is said to them.

I think its just a matter of saying why it bothers you and getting your feelings known.

Its not said to Fat people, cause no one would want to be fat, its said to skinny people cause we are jealous....want to be that way..etc

How is that train of thought, astounding?

the fact that your thoughts are all one-sided. hell, I am sorry if you view yourself as fat, but see it from the other side a bit for calling things "compliments" and "acceptable"...

people obviously do feel for people that struggle with obesity because it IS unacceptable to say stuff to people if they appear overweight...

you are just an extremely frustrating person on the way you can twist situations and things to be the way you want to view them or say things that people aren't really saying...

for me, I dont mind so much that the person is saying it - what i do HATE is how i respond. Instead of saying thank you i will just put myself down ( and i cant help but feel that this is the point of the comment)

"oh you should see me in a bikini, clothes hide my flaws"

" i won't stay this way for long"

"yeah, but when i DO gain weight i will never be able to lose it again"

i wish i could just say THANK YOU. and that is it!

Re: "You're so skinny, I hate you!"

Just to add something else...
This might be a topic for a completely different thread- but- I used to get very offended when I worked in retail and customers would say to me- "OH MY GOD you are so skinny! Do you EAT?" Yes I eat a lot.
"Well then you must throw up." No I don't throw up- thank you very much.
I also had one ask me- What size is that SKIRT??? With a look of disgust on her face.

At the time I was very self conscious about my lack of curves- and I had a very hard time gaining weight- not for lack of trying.
Now that I'm older and ballsier, I probably would respond with- my skirt is a size 2- what size is yours???

But the point it- it is never ok to ask an overweight person what size they wear or what they weigh- but skinny people are sometimes treated like a circus side show. What people don't realize is that being underweight can cause a person to be just as self conscious as being over weight. And I just think everyone needs to be more considerate of other people's feelings before making comments or asking personal questions- no matter what size, shape or color the person is.

I can't stand these type of comments Chat Icon My weight is average for my height and people are always telling me how skinny I am. I feel like saying, I'm not skinny, everyone else is fat!!! No one should comment on anyone's weight period. There are many people thinner than I , and it would never occur to me to tell them they are skinny
