see i don't understand what the big deal is about this comment?

I have never been insulted by this or even questioned it...

It's backhanded. Why is it ok for someone to say "You're so skinny, I hate you" but not "You're so fat, I hate you". The person giving the "compliment" could've just said, "Wow, you've got a great figure" or even "Wow, I'd kill to have your figure". But to throw in the "I hate you" part is kind of mean and twisted.

It's not mean and twisted... they're kidding around.

I agree 100%. My sisters and their friends say things liek that all the time (they are 19 and 18). Such as "you're so pretty, i hate you!". Lol. I always laugh when they do that..it sounds funny but its not meant in a mean way at all.

iITA. I'm not that skinny that people say that to me - but if they did i wouldn't take offense to it. They're admitting they're envious that you are. They don't really hate you - it's just a figure of speech - IMO,

I get that too - its very uncomfortable. I usually say something like "I'm trying to enjoy it while it lasts" or something equally as stupid.

totally agree-- in the same way someone will say, I can't believe you got front row Madonna tickets-- I hate you... Or, you have off the week between xmas and new years and I have to work-- I hate you... Or, you are going on vacation tomorrow--- I hate you.

this is not mean, vindictive or jealous-- it's an expression meant to show a friendly form of jealousy... not mean, green eyed monster jealousy.

I agree to an extent, but I think those examples are different. If someone said that to me I could say "yea i'm so excited, I haven't been away in so long" or "yea I can't believe it, i've never sat front row before" ... etc.

I just don't know what to say when someone says "you're so skinny, I hate you", especially when you hear it several times from the same person.

I think you should say either "Thanks. I work really hard at staying in shape" (if applicable) or "Love the fast metabolism!" (if applicable)

If that fails, opt for the Twinkies suggestion.

imo, it's rude to make comments about someone's weight when they are thin or PG.

I get the skinny comments too and there is not much you can say unless you want to make the person totally uncomfortable.

I understand that it's a compliment. But I've gotten this comment too and it makes me uncomfortable. And IMO, a compliment should not make you feel uncomfortable or wonder what to say in return. There are much nicer ways to compliment someone on their figure.

I agree - I think its sort of like when someone says "shut up!" Like - you grew up in Plainview? Shut UP - I grew up there too!!!

They arent REALLY telling you to shut up - same thing with "I hate you..."

ETA: I would get "thin/skinny" comments too (before I got pregnant!!!) and the thing is - I was overweight at one time, so people do the same thing - I hate you, you are so thin... etc - I tell them I eat very healthy and work very hard. I also get it now 1 month post partum and not looking like I just gave birth - I am not getting the - you are so thin comments - but - look at you, you dont look like you just gave birth - I hate you... etc - I just laugh it off...

no offense but that is really mean....like i posted above, i am not an "overeater" but I naturally have a very very hard time staying "thin" to society's standards. I have a slow metabolism and the chubby gene!

But why is it any meaner then making comments/assumptions to someone with a fast metabolism and the skinny gene that *they* deem negative? Are they automatically "undereaters"?

ETA: i have a very thin friend (not emaciated or anything but just naturally thin) and i say this to her and her response is always "dont hate me cause i'm beautiful" Chat Icon "...we joke. i dont go around saying this to complete strangers! but i know my limits with her and vice versa.

We big people (most anyway) always assume that skinny people don't mind weight/size comments.

I have an extremely thin cousin, she is beautiful...with ZERO self esteem and has attempted to go to nutritionists to GAIN weight (she eats perfectly fine)

People feel so free with comments to skinnier people that they don't realize how much it hurts. I have experienced both sides of the spectrum with the lovely experiences of puberty...I grew so fast I was 5'9" and 112 when I graduated HS (I am 139 now)

I got it in HS like...
"eat a burger" or "keep eating like that and you WILL be 200 pounds", "well your so damn skinny this would look good on someone like you."
I remember being at a sweet 16 and I overheard my BF's mom question if I had an eating disorder and I was crushed...

you would never say things reverse to a heavier person...at least not with a smile to their face.
