I'm probably alone on this one, but I like the experiment.
I think that it might help the less fortunate with a routine, and maybe help them change their lifestyle.
It's only an experiment right now. I'd like to see if it helps or not.
I agree- I think its better than just giving someone a check each month. I wish the govt. would do this with everyone so our school attendance would go up.

Why can't they offer them free daycare so that they can get real jobs?
Offer free medical care that is readily available?
Build more affordable homes and clean up their neighborhoods?
Tutoring-ESL programs-vocational programs free free free?
More grants to help them buy homes?
I think cash rewards are ridiculous.
JMO... My head was spinning as I read this.

"In New York, the two-year pilot program with about 14,000 participants will use private funds Bloomberg has raised because he did not want to spend government money on something that is highly experimental. More than $43 million has been raised toward the $53 million goal, Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs said."
IMO: We're not paying. Let's see if it will work. If it doesn't, at least he tried something different.
I agree. It's not our money to be up in arms about it.

Re: You have GOT to be kidding me...
This is driving me INSANE. I cannot believe people are supporting this.
Any parent that pushes their child to do better simply for $$ is not going to be teaching their child much b/c the reasons behind it are not right.
And I cant believe it has made larger news than this. DH and I have barely seen this anywhere.
I am sick over this. I think its a sad state for the city schools....

ETA: I just looked at that again $50.00 to get a library card?
Right. And will they then pay you to actually use that? And then will they come to the students house and pay them if they sit and hear them read the books too?
This is crazy IMO. I have taught students and I think this is a terrible incentive. Yes, I do it might make parents motivated, no doubt, but.....its just not right IMO.

I kind of agree- sometime has to be done to break the cycle- and if this is it- then so be it- I trust Bloomberg- he is not dumb
I completely agree

Tutoring-ESL programs-vocational programs free free free?
These things are already offered under NCLB. One of the things that's not often in the media (because they prefer to only hold teachers accountable) is the fact that many parents are NOT taking advantage of these programs. In my school, we send info home on a regular basis about SCORE, Kaplan, etc and how it would be free, and VERY few parents take advantage even though their kids really need the support. So I don't think this is going to help because many parents just don't take responsibility and I don't know if this program will make a difference.

I actually agree too. If it can encourage kids to go to school and get better grades so in turn they can get better jobs and not have to suffer like their parents do/did, then I think that's wonderful.

In theory, it sounds like something that should work very easily. But once past the experimental stages, I would be concerned that this program would be subject to them any abuses of many other social programs designed to help people. It would have to be so fine tuned that there is no room for error.
I agree.

Re: You have GOT to be kidding me...
how many of you have been given a lolli pop at the dentist, or a doll/toy car/real car/vacation/cookie from your parents or family for doing well in school or little league?
what is the difference here? is it the idea of YOUR money being used (which it isnt')
we are all involved in a Pavlovian society.
Push presents? Mother's Day gifts???
I am sure VERY few of you know what it's like to be really and truly POOR.
