Re: You have GOT to be kidding me...
Is this a state-wide thing or just the city? It seems though Bloomberg is funding it, that it is a state program.
Regardless, this is not a program I could ever support.

Re: You have GOT to be kidding me...
Why can't people just do the right thing...because it's the right thing to do??????
And I love this one....
"The theory behind cash rewards is that poor people are trapped in a cycle of repeated setbacks that keep them from climbing out of poverty. A person who doesn't keep up with his vaccinations and doctor's visits, for example, may get sick more often and struggle to stay employed."

I'm probably alone on this one, but I like the experiment.
I think that it might help the less fortunate with a routine, and maybe help them change their lifestyle.
It's only an experiment right now. I'd like to see if it helps or not.

Re: You have GOT to be kidding me...
It's really patronizing. Do they think poor people don't see a dentist every 6 months or a doctor every year b/c they...forget to? That single mothers don't hold a full time job b/c...there's just so much affordable day care that they can choose to go back whenever they want to?

We are slowly becoming a society that pats people on the back for everything they do!! This program is imo!!!

Re: You have GOT to be kidding me...
If poor people had decent health care and paid sick time off from their jobs, they might go to the doctor more often.
I worked with welfare moms in the past and heard what they had to go through to see a doctor or get their kids in to see a doctor. They would have to wait in the clinic for most of the day to see the only doctor (or maybe one of two) that was working to get marginal attention and care. I don't know if $100 is going to be more of an incentive, but adequate service and access might be.
i am glad if they are going to experiment, that they are using private funds for it.
ETA: I just looked at that again $50.00 to get a library card?

I kind of agree- sometime has to be done to break the cycle- and if this is it- then so be it- I trust Bloomberg- he is not dumb

Re: You have GOT to be kidding me...
"In New York, the two-year pilot program with about 14,000 participants will use private funds Bloomberg has raised because he did not want to spend government money on something that is highly experimental. More than $43 million has been raised toward the $53 million goal, Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs said."
IMO: We're not paying. Let's see if it will work. If it doesn't, at least he tried something different.

What's sad is that it's gotten so bad that they have to resort to this...
But honestly, I hope this does work. It would be great to eventually wean people off of this system.

Re: You have GOT to be kidding me...
Why can't they offer them free daycare so that they can get real jobs?
Offer free medical care that is readily available?
Build more affordable homes and clean up their neighborhoods?
Tutoring-ESL programs-vocational programs free free free?
More grants to help them buy homes?
I think cash rewards are ridiculous.
JMO... My head was spinning as I read this.

Re: You have GOT to be kidding me...
In theory, it sounds like something that should work very easily. But once past the experimental stages, I would be concerned that this program would be subject to them any abuses of many other social programs designed to help people. It would have to be so fine tuned that there is no room for error.

I agree with you. It doesn't hurt to give it a try, especially since he's using his own funds to do it.

Re: You have GOT to be kidding me...
He raised funds for the program on his own, so I say try it out. It sounds positive for children at least and as a NYC teacher, i appreciate that. But, if my tax dollars were paying for it I might feel differently.

I agree. And what busts me is how many people work hard, do the right things and are still struggling. The middle class is slowly disappearing.

I completely agree. I think there are programs that can be created to help them other than cash rewards. WHO KNOWS HOW THEY WILL SPEND THE $$$??? What if they use that money frivelously (sp?), use it to buy drugs or for criminal activity, etc. It is designed to help the poor, however, it may only create more problems in the long run. I would love to know who contributed money to this program

Re: You have GOT to be kidding me...
I hope it works but I would create different incentives.
It wouldn't be a cash reward it would be more in line with teach a person to fish instead of give him/her a fish.
