First thing:
Book a vacation - something small- maybe a weekend away.
Put the rest in the bank for our "House" fund.

I would book a vacation and then save the rest in the bank - and help out some dogs who are homeless and need help through ASPCA or some shelter.

If I am debt free I blow every single cent on something that I have wanted desperately.
Careless, reckless, stupid, whatever.
But I am going on vacation.
If it was more than 10K I would probably invest the 2nd 10K or sink it into the house.

We are getting some tax $$ back.
We decided to take $1000 of it and donate it ($100 to 10 different charities).
We will gift some to our DD.
ANd the rest goes towards retirement.

If I were debt free and the money was tax free, I would save the majority in a safe investment and then I would take a small portion to do something FUN. i.e. 10K total, 9k invested, 1k for play.

no debts. invest at least half. Then use the rest for home improvements that are needed- such as replacing the 70's carpet, the very old screen door that doesnt shut on its own and previous owners dog ripped the screen on....
