Okay, not to chew your ear off but...If I get the Nikon d3000 will the AF-s 35mm 1.8autofocus or would I have to go with a 1.4 and if so which one.

I want to buy the camera and one lens but I would prefer a great "portrait" style lens that autofocuses.
TIA!!!

All lenses in the AF-S series will autofocus on cameras that don't have the autofocus motor in the body of the camera. The AF-S is the designation that tells you the lens has the autofocus motor. So yes, the AF-s 35mm will autofocus on the d3000.

The best thing to do is to go to a camera store (B&H or someplace like that) and actually see, touch and demo the cameras. It will give you a better feel of where things are located and how the camera sits and feels in your hand. You should also be able to test lenses to see what you prefer. If that's not possible, try to borrow someone's DSLR and set the lens to 50mm and 35mm and see how you like that field of view.

You can always buy lenses later. Are you thinking about just buying the body now? A lot of the starter DSLR come with kit lenses, usually the 18-55 mm. While not the best, they're a decent starting point. You will not be able to get a very open aperature so indoor photos not using flash may be a challenge. Having a low aperature (the number following the mm on the lens) will also let you get that blurred background look that is very popular.

And remember, it's not just the equipment that takes great portrait style photos; it's the photographer! Chat Icon

TY so much! I notebooked this and will use it as a guide. I know I will want one good lens on top of the lens that the camera comes with so I will def do a little more research before I order.

Yesterday I went to best buy and it was a joke. Half of their slrs were not working. I'm going to try to look for a camera store in my area today
