Yet another SLR question canon or Nikon ***another question at bottom****
Please give me all the feedback you have bc I'm ready to buy.
I think I want to go with the Canon Rebel XS because I love the fact that it has a live view and overall great reviews.
But,the Nikon D3000 is a top contender as well.
So please give me any and all feedback (even comparisons if possible).
I'mparticulary interested in information on future upgrades and lens comparisons as well as what I NEED to get started right away.
TIA!

I have the D90 and LOOOOOOOOVE it. It also has live view. I am new to it(just got it in Jan) but have been taking a few classes. At every turn, I am so glad I chose the D90.

Re: Yet another SLR question canon or Nikon
I had the D60... and now have the D3000. When we lost our D60 we debated whether or not to go to Canon or stick with Nikon and we just had to stick with Nikon. We loved the D60 and since it was discontinued went with the D3000.
It's funny b/c DH's only concern was that maybe all the newer SLR's were going to have live view only and he didn't want that! The D3000 doesn't have it and he was SOLD. He really likes looking through the eye hole and I actually do to, you get used to it.

Re: Yet another SLR question canon or Nikon
At the price point you are looking they are very similiar. I have a Nikon D5000. Compared to Canon, I like the feel of the Nikon in my hands and the menus better. Go to a camera store and play a little. See what feels most comfortable to you.

Re: Yet another SLR question canon or Nikon
I have a Nikon d60 and love it. There's so much more to a SLR camera than just point and shoot. I would definitely not buy a SLR because of the live view option. I hate to use the word gimmick, but when I think of the live view option, I feel like it's there to lure the point and shoot camera users to the SLRs for that reason. You really don't need it or miss it at all!

ITA about the live view. I have a Canon Rebel T1i and chose it because it has HD video capability and love the fact that it has a "Creative" Auto feature - makes your pics look like they were shot in manual modes but really they weren't. Not sure if Nikon has these features also...
I always owned Canon's though, and felt more comfortable being somewhat familiar with the menus and icons.

Re: Yet another SLR question canon or Nikon
A huge thing to think about is some Nikons don't have autofocus in the body of the camera and I think the D3000 is one of them.
It's not a big deal if you're only going to use the kit lenses that come with the camera but if you're really going to get into photography, you'll probably want more lenses at some point.
If you buy a Nikon without autofocus in the body, you'll have to buy the AF-S lens series (autofocus in the lens itself) which is more expensive--like a lot more.
I believe all Canons have autofocus in the body of the camera but I'm a Nikon girl so can't tell you more about them.
I have a Nikon D40 (replaced by the 3000) and have been really happy with it until I learned more about photography and wanted to expand my lens collection.
But LOVE my SLR!

Re: Yet another SLR question canon or Nikon
I got the Nikon D3000 in April and I'm in love!!! It is great for a first time SLR user as it has a guide and auto mode that shows you how to take better pictures. I have not yet graduated to manual picture taking just yet, so this guide mode is fabulous!

I have the D5000 and I love it. It does have the live view however I don't use it!!! I thought it would be a good thing, I use the eye hole I feel I have such a better feel for what I am shooting that way....light wise and everything. I agree go to the store and feel them out. Try the D3000, D5000, and the Canon. See which one feels better to you.

Yes!The more I reasearch I am less concerned with the LIVE VIEW and more concerned with the autofocus. I would like to buy the 50mm lense (1.8) but am not sure if the body of the canon xs will auto focus it or if I will have to do this manually????? Does anyone know?
Also, I actualluy prefer taking pics with no live view but my husband and other people that will be taking pics fromtime to time find it easier and I would like to be in some pics lol!

ITA. I don't have live view on my SLR (Olympus) and don't miss it at all. I heard you're really shouldn't rely on it when it comes to an SLR.

If you buy the entry level Nikons, they don't have auto-focus in the body of the camera and you will have to buy the AF-S lens series to be able to autofocus. There is a huge price difference in the lenses.
I bought the AF-S 50mm 1.4 lens for my D40 and it cost about $400. The regular 50mm 1.8 (note the difference in aperture) was about $120, if I remember correctly. You can buy the non-AF-S lens for the D40 but will have to manually focus it which is only good if you have subjects that sit still for a long time (i.e., not kids).
That said, I don't regret getting the D40 even though I didn't know about the whole auto-focus thing before. For a lot of people, any DSLR is a huge upgrade from a point and shoot and just leaving it in auto mode is enough. I started getting into photography and wanting to learn more about going manual after 2 years of having my D40.
Remember that buying a Nikon with auto focus in the body of the camera will be much more expensive (but cheaper lenses). If you think you will only want one or two additional lenses, not having autofocus may not matter (but I'm telling you now, it's addictive).
Eventually, I will upgrade my body but for now and what I use my camera for, the D40 with the 50mm 1.4 is good enough for me. I rarely use the kit lenses now.

Thanks for all of the info. What Nikon Models do have autofocus where I would just be able to buy the 50mm 1.8 and it wouldautofocus for me?

I'm not totally sure with all the new models but based on the old model numbering, I think you had to get the D90 to get the autofocus in the body. The D90 is a lot more expensive than the D40 (now D3000). Neither the D3000 or the 5000 have autofocus.
Like I said before, I don't regret buying my Nikon. In fact, I it! But I do wish I knew this stuff way back when. However, if you're using it for snapshots and leaving it on Auto mode, it won't made that huge of a difference.
Also, if you opt to go with a Nikon without autofocus, think about getting the AF-S 35mm 1.8. Because of the crop factor on the D3000, it really is more like a 50 mm and the 50mm lens is really 75mm. The AF-S 35mm is around $200, which is pretty reasonable.
Remember that both the 50mm and 35mm are fixed prime lenses so the only zoom you will have is your feet.

Okay, not to chew your ear off but...If I get the Nikon d3000 will the AF-s 35mm 1.8autofocus or would I have to go with a 1.4 and if so which one.
I want to buy the camera and one lens but I would prefer a great "portrait" style lens that autofocuses. TIA!!!
