Ahhhh!
My mom and MIL both bought DD the same exact gift and I don't have the heart to tell either one of them!
I know I have to tell one of them. My mom bought the gift 2+ months ago. My MIL bought it yesterday. Neither of them knew what each was going to get, so it's just ironic that they both got the same thing.
My mom probably has more time to exchange and get something else, but she did get it first.
What do I do?

Not a major problem. There are two obvious choices either accept both or tell one to return it. This too shall pass.

I would ask for the receipt for one after xmas and tell whomever that it was broken/missing a piece or what have you. Then return it and keep one. No one has to know, LOL.

We got a few things that are the same. I have no problem telling them both... oh, we got this already from my mom... or we got this already from MIL.
Both my mom and MIL would say the same thing... just return it and get what you want. Doesn't matter which gift is from who. DC will play with it either way and get something else. As another poster said... you can always leave one at the house too. I told my mother we actually got three of the same toy so my mom said she'll either return it and get something else or leave it at the house.

It would all depend on if DD is talking. Saying "Grandma X got me this too!" would put a damper on whoever gives it to her last.
I would tell my mom that my MIL got her the same gift & then tell her that I'll tell MIL she already got it. If she offers to return it (which my mom would offer because she is a shopper), then I'd take her up on it.

ohhh I didn't know both parents would be there together ~ Then I would definitely tell you MIL since your mom purchased it first. Good Luck!

I agree 100% its a cleaner solution. I hate making up stories cause then I have to remember them! 
Id prolly suggest another gift you 'just saw' or that she would 'love' as a subsitute for the gift she just bought.

Thanks everyone!
Both moms will be there on Christmas Day when DD opens presents, so I have to tell one of them.
I know it will pass and I'm probably making this into a bigger deal then it really is!
But of all the toys in the world, the odds that both would get the same exact gift is just ironic!

I would think it would be easier to tell your mom. It was that way when my MIL was still around. Even if she bought it first.

I also want to say that if I tell someone what I got their child/spouse/whatever it is because I want their feedback and to me that includes if someone already got it for the person

I would just thank my MIL and let her know that the same gift was already purchased a while back and would she mind returning it for something else. It's not a big deal, I don't think she would be offended. Duplicate gifts happen!

I spoke with my mom and told her what happened and she has no problem returning her gift.
Her response, "we both have good taste"!

i think it depends on your relationship with both moms... when ds turned one he got two of the same gift, but my mother had purchased one so, since i am alot closer to her, i told her we had a duplicate and she gave me the reciept to return it, i would never have the heart to mention it to my il's
