WWYD? Babysitter fee related
My sister (13yr) took over a babysitting job for another family member who could not do the job due to a summer sport. She was asked to babysit for 3 children at 6pm and stay overnight although the parent- a family friend would be home at 1:30. He would be going to work and was in a pinch for a sitter.
At 11:30p she was surprised by his now ex girlfriend (non-parent) who is moving out coming home to sleep in the spare bedroom. The women said hello and went straight to the bedroom, never to be seen again.
At 1:25 am the parent came came home and my sister slept on the couch. In the morning she was given an envelope and dropped off.
Opening the envelope at home she saw that it was $50 not the $100 that she was expecting being that the other cousin and parent discussed that this was the overnight rate.
My sister contacted the parent twice and 3 days later was called he said that the rate was $10 p/hr and being that there was an "adult" in the house at 11:30 he was only paying her from 6-11:30.
I am interested to know what you think (if anything) he owes my sister. This is a family friend and my Grandma doesn't want to rock the boat... what do you think! My mom said that my sister would no longer be babysitting for him.

had it been someone older than 13 sitting for THREE kids, it would have cost him MORE money especially overngiht.. whether or not the ex came home is moot.. it's not like she relieved your sister to go home at 1130 kwim?

This is my thinking too. I am really upset for her. She is trying to save money and get summer babysitting jobs. I think she feels like whats the point if our Uncle's friend is going to 'cheat' her out of $$.

Your sister was still responsible for the kids, even though an adult was there. She wasn't informed by the parents that there would be someone coming to watch the kids, so until she hears from the parents, she's responsible for them.
The overnight rate is $100. She watched the kids overnight, as agreed to. Therefore, she should get what the agreement was for.

Your sister should say he owes her $80, she doesn't watch exgirlfriends free of charge.

This is ridiculous. He's a really "special" kind of guy to take advantage of and rip off a 13 year old kid.
I know you don't want to make any waves, but I would have to say something. He wouldn't have tried to pull this on an adult. This really pisses me off!!

He definitely owes her if that was the price discussed.
I was a nanny in college and usually when the mom's bf came home, he would let me go home. One day he was home when i picked the kids up from school. The mom called me right away and said "DO NOT LEAVE" they were breaking up and he wasn't "stable" (on a side note his last name was Kaszinski at the time of the unibomber! and the unibomber's brother lived in the area)
long story short - I got paid for being there!

The guy sounds like a douche...ripping off a kid? That's a HUGE responibility to expect of a 13 year old (watching 3 kids overnight). I would rip him a new one if I came across him.
