WWYD??

I went to the foodstore last night to grab a few things...

I got online and waited while the cashier paged a manager for help with EVERYTHING.

I am 100% honestly telling you that she paged a manager because the person in front of me gave her a coupon and she didn't know what to do.

My turn- the manager gets paged because I wanted cash back from my debit card.

I leave, check my watch and realize that I was online for 14 minutes- with only 2 customers in front of me- each of who only had a handful of items.

I get to the car and realize that rocket science cashier girl gave me $60 instead of $50. I was only debited for $50.

WWYD? Go back in? Keep it? Donate it?

I checked my transactions today and the debit already went through for the $50 plus my grocery total.

Re: WWYD??

Keep it, her mistake. They shouldn't let cashiers be alone if they aren't trained yet, plain and simple.

Re: WWYD??

I'm a goodie goodie and I wouldn't want her to have to pay the $10 herself when the register comes up short, so I would have gone back, found the manager and told him what happened.

Re: WWYD??

Go back in, I was a cashier and if you are short they can take it out of your check. Maybe she just started and they didn't train her long enough, it might not be her fault.

Re: WWYD??

This has happened to me before and I always give it back. The cashier is responsible for their draw and will come up short if you don't. Besides, I don't need 10 or 20 bucks that bad, I'd rather have a clear conscience.

No, but she will most likely get written up for it.

Re: WWYD??

I would have given it back if I realized the mistake before I left the store parking lot.

If I had gotten all the way home and then realized it, I would probably not bother going back. Chat Icon

I wouldn't give it back. I worked as a cashier at several places and they never take it out of your paycheck where I worked.

Esp if she is new.

I would not give it back....if she gets in trouble or even terminated, she will learn how to count back change and be more aware of what she is doing.

I would want to keep it because of being on line for so long, but it could have been her first day. I would have returned it. Some places make you pay back the register if your short.

Keep it - that is your reward for putting up with her BS! Chat Icon

Eta: Kidding - she would have come up short at the end of the night and if she is in training, that usually happens....but it's up to you!

Same here. If I realized it at the time I would have given it back, but if it involved going back in and wasting more time, I probably wouldn't.

Re: WWYD??

For all the waiting you had to do I can see feeling like it was a "payment" for your wasted time. And I don't feel that much pity for the cashier, since like you said it's not rocket science. And, really, it was just $10. But, I still would have probably returned it (as long as I noticed it before I left the parking lot). I was a cashier years ago at a supermarket and the one time I was short they gave me a warning and threatened that the next time it happened they would take it out of my paycheck.

On a slightly related note, one time I was at the self-checkout at Pathmark and I got $20 cash back, but forgot to pick it up from the tray- I remembered in the parking lot but when I went back someone had already pocketed it. In that case though it was MY stupid mistake, and also it was probably the customer behind me who took it, not an employee.
