WWYD - a telling work question? (a bit different)

OK so I am about 7 and a half weeks, obviously too early to tell most people. However, I am a high risk patient with a history of heart problems so yesterday at our appointment my dr. made it clear I will be coming in about every 2-3 weeks, plus I need to go for a cardiac workup. I tried to make as many appointments around work as possible. I work at a private school in the city, so we only get 5 personal/sick days (per school year). I have used 2 already this year for serious illness, so I technically have 3 more between now and June. I have one appointment coming up that is during the day so I will need to take half a day - the appointment is earlier than I wanted to tell work.

I adore my supervisor, she is wonderful, and my job has typically been really relaxed/flexible with pregnancies but it is also hard to miss because I work directly with kids.

Should I just quietly tell my direct supervisor and explain the special nature of this because of my additional heart issues? I have a feeling they will be really understanding, but I'm still a bit nervous. Thoughts?

You'd probably normally tell at 12 weeks, correct?

Unless you'll need 3 days off in the next 4.5 weeks I'd probably wait. I work until 6pm and was always able to get appointments at night or on Saturdays. Is your doc office not open late?

I would wait until 12 weeks the least. Try and see the doc's appt can accomodate for a later time? good luck

They are, they aren't open weekends though and for regular check ups it should be okay but the evening appointments get booked crazy fast so for my NT scan which has to be done at 12 weeks I could only get something during the day. My cardiologist isn't open late so that appointment will also have to be during the day and my OB would like me to go there as soon as I can.

I might be in the minority here but I'd tell, if it would put my mind at ease. Which it sounds like it would for you.

I would tell also, it will be less stressful for you. During my last pregnancy I worked in a self contained class with a very aggressive 12 year old boy. I wasn't sure what to do but I decided to tell my AP at 6 weeks. She didn't tell a soul and I felt better that she knew.

If it was me... I'd tell. Especially if she's great about it and they have been good about other people's pregnancies.

I told my boss at 8 weeks, but then again, he already knew that we were trying b/c my RE appts were so random and I wasn't always able to work them around my schedule.

If it will make you feel less stressed about your appts, then I would tell your supervisor.

Oh I wasn't planning on telling now, my next appointment is in 2 weeks and I don't need to miss work for it, I think I'll tell after that one. I have one 3 weeks following that I will need to miss work for so that gives her 3 weeks notice about that, but gives me another appointment to make sure all looks good before I tell.

I am a full time nanny. At 5 weeks I had spotting/bleeding issues. I had to tell my boss since I had to run to the dr. There has been no issue. We just decided not to tell the kids till 20 weeks. I would tell.

I am a supervisor and I had a staff member in this situation, she told me when she was very early pregnant- like 9 weeks... I kept it quiet of course but it made it a lot easier for both of us that we were on the same page.

I would have hated to discipline her or write her up and then later find out that she was pregnant!

Me too.

I told my boss at 6 weeks because I was having such bad MS that it started to effect what time I came to work. I have a very flexible schedule so I just started my work day after I felt better.

2 weeks later I ended up telling another supervisor in our dept. and our program director 1.To also let him know about a change in schedule and 2.the other supervisor just came back from mat. leave so I wanted someone I could go to god-forbit something happend at work. My office is 45 min. from my home and DH works 45 min. in the opposite direction.

Thank you, this is great. I'm thinking of telling around 9 weeks or so also.

But thank you!! I just feel like 7 weeks is still a bit too early to tell, especially since I have a bit of time until I need to miss work.

If something else happens that would require me to take additional time between now and my appointment in 2 weeks I'll probably tell her.

I told my boss at 7 weeks. We had 2 others in my set pregnant and we were going to overlap leave so I wanted him to have plenty of time to schedule cover.

WWYD - a telling work question? (a bit different)

I told my boss around 6-7 wks. I work in the city and my Dr is in Bohemia so even taking the last appt they has required me to leave work early. I had issues with bleeding/spotting so I was going in every week or two to make sure everything was ok. I was not an employee that got sick or randomly needed days off at moments notice so after the first few times I had to ask for time, my boss actually asked if everything was ok. I wast comfortable telling people so early, but I also wasn't going to lie to my boss. In the end, I felt much more comfortable about things once she knew.

If you are already 7 1/2 weeks and appts will be every 2-3 weeks, it won't be long before you have an appt and are out of the first tri. I'd wait. It's not like you're being seen weekly. Chat Icon

I would definitely tell. I told my supervisor when I had to miss a day of work. I think people are much more understanding when they realize absences are pregnancy related and help keep it quiet. Even if something heaven forbid went wrong you may still need the time off.
