question re: telling work...

Just looking for some opinions. I am in a position at work where i have NO back-up (i'm an attorney and i'm the only associate in my department). They've been meaning to hire someone but it keeps getting pushed off (honestly i think because we're so busy that it's been a time thing). If you were me would you tell them sooner being that they'll definitely need to hire someone regardless but even more so now that I'll be out at the end of the year, and won't be here to work with the new person (training, etc.)?

By way of background I've been working at this firm for the past 9+ years, but have only been in this department since April.

Thanks!

Re: question re: telling work...

i think if that's the case I would tell at least your direct boss sooner, at 12/13 weeks.

i told my boss at 16 weeks and still haven't told the whole office yet (i'm almost 19 weeks) but I probably will later this week or next week after our anatomy scan

Re: question re: telling work...

IMO, I would tell them sooner. When DH accepted a job in another state, I told my boss about 3 months beforehand (instead of two weeks notice). I only did this because I was the only one that did anything related to my position, and I knew it would take a few months for a job search to get approved, form a committee, hire someone, etc. It was kind of awkward for me because everyone knew I was leaving, but the entire staff at the university was really thankful that I gave them time to do a proper search.

I would tell them at 12 wks...that gives them more than enough time to fill the position and for you to train!

i would wait till at least the 12 weeks. the first tri is stressful and i think after 12 weeks is plenty of time for your boss to figure something out for during your leave of absence.

ITA. That leaves more than enough time to fill the position.

I am in a similar situation as you. As soon as I was given the ok from my MD, I told my bosses. I wanted to give them the heads up as soon as possible so they had time to deal with the situation. They definitely appreciated it.

12weeks is OK for you to tell them. They'll have mjore than enough time to develop a maternity plan with you and related to hiring someone.
