would you say something (neighbor related)

If your new neighbor was doing things on their property that you felt was not appropriate and made your block look bad, would you say something, or would you mind your business? This is totally gross, and it can definitely decrease the value of the neighborhood. I really want to say something, but I don't want to be the mean person who says it first. I really hate looking across the street because of this. What should I do?

I probably wouldn't say anything. Not your property to say anything.

Can you elaborate on what exactly is being done?

That may make me have a different opinion, but I still don't think what a person chooses to do with their home and/or property renders having a neighbor tell them they don't like it.

They are hanging clothes to dry in their front windows, mostly underwear and shirts. The other day they even hung them on by their front door. Is this ok?

Personally, no, I would not say anything. It stinks to have to look at it, but I would think that they have a right to do whatever they want to in their house, not matter how ugly it looks. But, that's the way I am -- non-confrontational. I don't handle conflict well. Chat Icon

Hanging clothes!!! Where I live no one has tumble dryers and everyone hangs their clothes in their backyards. I don't want to look at my next door neighbors underpants, but unfortunately they can hang their clothes wherever they want. I don't think it will bring down the value of your property, it can be taken down as soon as they went up.

I wouldn't say anything, its their right to do it.

I agree with APs. As long as it's not dangerous or illegal, you really can't say anything. It's your personal preference that you don't like it. Would you like it if someone came to your house and said "You need to buy a different car. We think your car in the driveway is making our houses look bad."

Hey, maybe it will *help* your property values.... "Our neighborhood is very green. We conserve electricity by not using energy wasting dryers. See, look at the neighbors for instance."

Re: would you say something (neighbor related)

our community has rules and one of them is you can't hang your clothes Chat Icon which is fine b/c like you, i think it looks bad - especially underwear in the window! but if there is no "rule" against it, i guess you can't really say anything....

Some towns don't allow clothes lines but not sure there are rules about clothing hanging in the home.

This is a temporary thing, not like clothing will always be in the window so can't really say this brings down property values.

it's really not your place to say anything.
What maybe gross to you, could be acceptable to someone else - unless its illegal or a hazard, you can't say anything.

ITA! And I can't see how this would lower the value of your home. Its clothes that come back inside within a day or 2. even if they left them out there for a week, its not a permanent thing that is ALWAYS going to reflect on your neighborhood.

Re: would you say something (neighbor related)

The only thing I wonder about is why they would hang them out front windows. It makes me think maybe it's a boarding house and the resident of a particular room is washing stuff in a sink and hanging their clothing out their "bedroom" window to dry.

Actually I can. I personally would not buy a home with a house in sight that does things such as this (hanging clothing in windows, no less underwear, etc). Looks crazy to be honest, and I would steer clear.

heck, some towns dont even allow actual clothes lines so this is way worse, hanging clothes in windows and doors. Never saw it and know I would not like it. I dont blame the OP for feeling this way.

To the OP, dont say anything, they have every right and you wont win! It sux you have to see that.

Thats my thought as well. So I do think it can lower property value for sure.

That's disgusting. I'm gonna admit it I'd be VERY unhappy living next to that. I wouldn't confront them face to face. Maybe an anonymous letter or a complaint into the town--yes you can report houses that are an eyesore. We have a commitee in our development that deals with things like this. We can complain the them and they handle it.

True, I would try to get them investigated for possibly being a rooming house, etc.

I can also see how this could discourage someone from buying a home on the block and IMO it could make a really nice block look not nice - i'm pretty sure that is why my communty has a bunch of rules - it keeps the neighborhood looking good....

Maybe the OP can contact someone anonymously like a previous poster mentioned.....that might be a good idea....

I would send an anonymous letter, but that would be the extent of it. I don't think you should say anything.
