Would you go to a Chicken Pox Party?

Just saw this on the Morning show and was wondering what you ladies would do and your thoughts.

My mother and her friends did this with us when I was in elementary school. We all had it at the same time and were done. My daughter has already be vaccinated against it and my baby is under a year so I wouldn't

I remember my brother getting the chicken pox, and all his friends who never had it were sent over by their mothers to play with my brother. They came over until they got it.Chat Icon

Re: Would you go to a Chicken Pox Party?

Wow, so it was sort of done back when we were younger. But would you go now (if your DC was over a year let's say and didn't get the vaccine yet)?

I think I might if the possibility came up.

No I would not. Although not always possible, I try to avoid germs as best as possible.

I feel the same but I feel just as strongly about vaccines on another note. So I am on the fence...part of me would want to but part of me would get so skeeved.

No, for two reasons. One, that I would never purposefully make my child sick and second, you don't know what you will get.

I had chicken pox at age 5 and only had 5 spots total I caught it from a friend at school who had a severe case. For many years I was told I had a great chance of getting it again b.c. I might not be immune (when I got pregnant and they did blood work it turns out that I am immune), but you never know your child could end up with a horrific painful case which several of my friends ended up with - and they could have complications from it. Now if my child caught it on their own just by taking them to school or to a child's activity that to me is a very different story than taking my child somewhere in the hopes that they catch an illness.

Re: Would you go to a Chicken Pox Party?

No, I wouldn't.

There can be serious complications (meningitis, pneumonia) to getting chicken pox and I don't want to inflict that on my kid. They are rare, but still not something I want to expose my kid to.

Though these same complications can result from the vaccine, the risk of them occurring is greater if you have the disease as opposed to the vaccine.

Re: Would you go to a Chicken Pox Party?

I definitely wouldn't! First off, I have never had chicken pox and I am not vaccinated either. Secondly, I wouldn't purposely put my DD in a situation where she can contract a virus! I think it's a crazy idea to do it. Chat Icon

I wouldn't. My brother had them so bad, it was painful to look at him. There is no way my son wouldn't scratch them and I don't want him to end up scarred. I would rather deal with the vaccination.

Funny I was talking about this with an old friend recently. When I got chicken pox her mom sent her over every day...it was like the best sick days ever, I got to stay home AND my friends came to play!

ETA: I would consider it later in life, when my DS was school aged.

When I was a kid once someone heard that a kid had chicken pox nobody made an effort to keep you away from that kid. I remember once my brother got it my mom was happy that both my sister and I caught it so she got it over with for all 3 of us in one shot.

You make a great point and I think that's probably where I would stand, looking at from your perspective. Thanks !

Re: Would you go to a Chicken Pox Party?

No way. I wouldn't willingly expose my DS to something that could make him really sick.

When I was a kid, all 4 of us had the chicken pox at the same time. I still remember the scratching! There's no way I would want DS to go through that if he didn't have to.

Agreed, I would do it school aged, obviously not as an infant, just wanted to clarify that.

Nope. If I had opted not to vaccinate my child I would probably just wait and see but we opted for the vaccination.

I guess main reason is the actual disease provides lifelong immunity whereas the vaccine does not. They had 2 drs on the show this am, one was for the parties one was against and the above point was the arguement.

Re: Would you go to a Chicken Pox Party?

My brother came home with the chicken pox and made me rub and touch him ~ I was older junior high maybe and she wanted me to get it (My stepfather got the chicken pox in his early 30's and was severly sick and had to go into the hospital)

would I send my DS to chicken pox party I am not sure that I would.
