Re: Would you ever be a bone marrow donor?
DH and I both joined the registry last summer.
He got called almost immediately!
He did the PBSC (Peripheral Blood Stem Cell) donation, because that's what the recipient's condition called for.
He declared that it was the most defining moment of his life - to know that he could be saving someone's life. I hope the recipient contacts him as he's truly curious as to how she's doing.
He was quite sick afterward - but still proclaims that he'll do it again in a heartbeat.

That is amazing! How wonderful of your DH!

Re: Would you ever be a bone marrow donor?
my FIL was recently diagnosed with Leukemia. He's been in the hospital for almost 2 months now and we just found out his bone marrow is clear after an aggressive round of chemo. We were all ready to be tested. after this experience i would donate in a heartbeat.
ETA...i just checked the requirements. i had spine surgery last year and still have a herniation i'm not eligible.

Re: Would you ever be a bone marrow donor?
I am already in the bone marrow registry. The kit was very easy to do-and then they send you the paperwork in a few weeks. I registered because people of my racial/ethnic makeup are very poorly represented in the registry. If I can help save somebody's life, I would be glad to.

I would do it for my family or a close friend. I am not sure if I would be able to do it for a stranger.
me too.
ditto... its a very personal decision... i wouldnt blame people if they had conditions for it...

Re: Would you ever be a bone marrow donor?
In a second. I am on the list. My friend's son needed one and no faily or friends matched. 3 random people on the donor list and he is now 6 years in remission.
They keep it anonymous until after everything (if both sides agree). They met their donor and I just don't know how I couldn't donate if I matched.

Re: Would you ever be a bone marrow donor?
I am on the registry and would donate if called. It is so sad how many people join the registry for a friend or family member and do not donate when called for a stranger. If you get the kit and are put on the registry please make sure to take yourself off the list if you are not a match for this one case and would not donate for others. I know a woman whose young adult daughter died of leukemia. They found three matches for her in the registry but none of them went through with the donation.

I've heard of this happening before. How truly sad. To know that you have a match but that person doesn't want to do it, it must really be heartbreaking for the recipient and the family.
ITA... if your not a match for the person you put yourself on the list for, take your name off if you don't want to donate to a stranger...
