would you buy a house if...

...the backyard bordered a park? Specifically, a baseball field?

The house is gorgeous, in a great town. The sellers (and their neighbors) all did a great job putting up nice fencings and very tall privacy type trees that totally block the view of the field. But, I guess my worry is...all summer while in your backyard you'll hear games going.

Thoughts?

That wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. If you love the house I would go for it. A park doesn't bother me

Re: would you buy a house if...

DH and I were tallking about this last weekend. We bought a house across the street from a park. We had no idea!!!!!! The entrance is across the street and two houses over and is a pathway between two houses. The only thing we deal with is folks parking in front of our house and chatter before and after the practice/games.

Is it possible to view the house when a practice/game is going on? I'd talk to some neighbors and see what they have to say.

From the sounds of it me thinks you are going to go for itChat Icon! Chat Icon

is there a chance of balls flying over into your yard? (this may sound silly but we saw a house with a very tall fence that was up for this reason) that would stop me. or the possibility of crazy traffic - that would stop me too.

We were faced with that decision too on a house we saw, and we decided against it. I envisioned not only the nice things - kids playing in the park - but the not so nice things. Teenagers hanging out there at night and on weekends too, drinking, etc.

We're easily annoyed by such things though. Chat Icon

I would definitely go by when there is a game going on. The parking shouldn't be an issue if you are behind it, but I would worry about loudspeakers going all night (if they use them).

I guess it would depend on how busy the park and baseball field are. Are their games all the time? Every night and all weekend? If so, I would probably stay away. But if its more quiet, then I wouldn't mind.

Re: would you buy a house if...

baseball games can go on pretty late and the sound of the bat hitting the ball would make me nuts. plus the lights will be on for the game. that would be a deal breaker for me.

Re: would you buy a house if...

Close friends of ours have a house right on a high school baseball field. It drives them crazy in the summer because it can get really loud. I personally think it's cool when we are out on their deck and can hear/see the game, but I guess that's easy for me to say when I don't have to live with it. For me and my husband though, it wouldn't be a dealbreaker, if anything, I think it would be a bonus!

Re: would you buy a house if...

We had this issue and decided not to buy that house. It's actually around the block from where we live now, so sometimes when we are walking, we go by it and the block gets crowded with parents parking...the house was literally behind a baseline and I was worried about the noise and of course, balls flying over...

ETA...if there are big lights, think about that at night as well...

Re: would you buy a house if...

I wouldn't. I like privacy and feel that next to a field like that I'd have crowds around often, unnecessary noise and the possibility of foul balls breaking my windows! I wouldn't want the added traffic on my block either.

Re: would you buy a house if...

I would not be happy if there was a lot of traffic on the block, and people parking in front of your house alot.

I get sooooo annoyed if someone parks in front of my house, luckily on my block no one ever parks in front.

Re: would you buy a house if...

You guys all bring up great points that I didn't even think of like foul balls breaking windows (or worse, hitting one of the kids! ), and the lights at night...that would not be good.

I didn't notice if the field had lights...like I said, they did an awesome job at blocking the view of the field. If I didn't do an airial view of the address on Google...I probably never would have noticed it!

I love the house, but I also have a tendency to rush into things. Maybe I need to take a step back and say...this is not the one for us, and my dream house is out there and I will find it in time. Chat Icon

Re: would you buy a house if...

I used to live next to a school and the field was behind our house.(I rented). There were kids in the yard all the time getting the balls that they had hit over the fence. The fence was at least 12' high - huge metal fence, and the balls were still constantly in the yard. It was a huge PITA .... The parking for the school was bad at 9am and 3 pm too, but the field really made living there a bit annoying

My Grandmother's is directly behind Mepham High School. It's nice when they have track meets/games, etc. Not so nice when kids are in the field drinking on the weekends. Nevermind how many windows she's lost to foul balls.
