I think I am safe, but you never know. I work for an insurance company and know people who work for AIG. I would be unable to sleep at night if I worked for them. Ugh.

This is so scary!!! Chat Icon

I am not scared for my job. I teach in NYC and have tenure. My DH's job however is another story. He works in retail and who knows what could happen.Chat Icon

Absolutely. I work for an insurance company and they are already talking about "restructuring".

I'm a city teacher with tenure and seniority. I am not worried about losing my job, but with the budget cuts I have a feeling that I am going to end up with too-big classes.

I do worry about DH- he is a tenured professor at a private college, but the least senior. I wonder what will happen if students can't get student loans.

I work in healthcare so I'm not too worried but I would never assume that I am immune to a layoff.

Re: With the economy today, are you nervous about possibly losing your job??

DH and I are both in school to be teachers. Until we are done, DH works in the family business (which has not suffered at all and probably will not - it is just a very good business to be in) and I work at a school. DH will be done and can teach in May/June. He'll be ready for the next upcoming school year and will use the time from May until September to apply and find a job. Luckily, his field is science which is one of the most in demand subjects. For me, I have a little less than a year until my undergrad is all done. At that point, I'll start substitute teaching until I'm done with my Master's. The subject I want to teach is also in demand - luckily. So, we should be OK and once we get our teaching jobs and tenure we'll be very secure. We are just fortunate that the subjects we are going for are in demand.

Re: With the economy today, are you nervous about possibly losing your job??

No we are all ready there and it was a surprise. DH lost his without warning the end of July. Due to high gas prices his company had to lay off 30 people to even out expenses. They ship sand and gravel around the US and they weren't making profit at all.

This economy issue really stinks. We were all set with everything thinking we are in a good place then bam overnight things change. Chat Icon

No. I have enough seniority that I don't have to worry. I'm lucky.

See, this is exactly it. One minute all is good, the next, BOOM, life changes.

I can't even imagine it happening, but I know that it could. My DH is a teacher, so we are not worried about him.

I get a company car and pay for no gas and only a small insurance payment on it... so if I lost my job, not only would I lose my income, but my car too! Chat Icon

I was going to ask a similar question too- based on all the threads.... basically asking if many people's jobs were dependant upon the economy?

I'm a nurse and feel confident about the hospital that i work in, but even if it were to have problems, i feel secure that i'd be able to find another job if something were to happen (god forbid). DH has a govt position that isn't influenced by the economy either.

Re: With the economy today, are you nervous about possibly losing your job??

Yes kind of. I work for a rating agency. They already did some layoffs earlier this year but my group rates variable rate deals and we were extremely busy. Since the drop in the market last week we have slowed down considerably...we were averaging 25-30 deals a week in my group alone (a lot for us) now alot of them have been delayed.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon for everyone and that America gets out of this mess soon.

Re: With the economy today, are you nervous about possibly losing your job??

I work in RE as a title closer and broker. I have my own small business. Things are VERY bad out there. I am breaking even right now and some months take a loss. Two years ago I was doing VERY well. The last two months have been OK for me personally b/c a lot of title companies are going out of business and a lot of title closers are getting other full time jobs outside of the title and RE industry. In a way, It is good for me in the sense that when the RE market comes back, I will still be around and make lots of $$$$ in a few years. But for right now, i am holding on with my fingernails.

BUT...

DH is in IT and is very specialized. He has a high demand job, so if there was a lay off I think we will be OK. Chat Icon

Re: With the economy today, are you nervous about possibly losing your job??

I'm a teacher, I've only been teaching in the county for a few years, but there are other people who would have to be let go before me.

I'm more worried about having to deal with even more budget cuts this year - how thats going to effect the size of my classes, supplies, etc.

So, while the economy does effect my job/performance... I'm not worried about actually losing my job.

Re: With the economy today, are you nervous about possibly losing your job??

My DH owns his own small business

Thankfully things have been good, he has surpassed what he took in last year at this time, and there are still 3 months to go in 2008

I work for DH so we basically dont have anything to fall back on. Its very scary and i am worried that anything can happen

Him not so much, he seems unfazed by everything going on, he has absolutely no idea about the market, the bailout or the forclosures.
Ignorance is bliss i guess
