Teachers are people too. They aren't standing sober in a classroom 24/7
I cannot fathom the number of candles and bath and body works stuff these teachers must get. My MIL is a hs teacher and gets tons of candles, lotion, ornaments. She hates candles, is allergic to anything scented and is Jewish. I'm sure she's appreciative of everything, but it's of no use to her.
I don't know why people still think lotion and candles are good gifts for teachers. I cannot fathom how many of these items they must receive.
But wine, something they could actually use or bring to a party or re-gift- OH THE HUMANITY!!!
You would think they were giving them sex toys or lingerie as a gift.

Wine as teacher gift
In daycare I think cash, giftcards or wine are great gifts.
Once elementary school and above hits Id stick to thoughtful notes and giftcards.

Same. I think it's fine for daycare where the parent is bringing it in and you typically have a closer relationship with the teacher. Once they kit K and are bringing in the gift themselves and you don't know the teacher well then I wouldn't do it.

Daycare, or where you are friends with the teacher yes, otherwise gift cards. No one wants the regifted candle and lotions.

As I teacher I would LOVE WINE as a gift. Even more than the $25 Starbucks gift card I received today because I rarely drink coffee, and when I do not from there. But wine I drink every weekend. Bring it on!

Our school has each teacher fill out an ‘all about me’ every year for the class mom to share with the class. On it are questions like coffee/tea? Favorite color? Favorite flower? Favorite lunch spot? And then space to write in. Some teachers put their wine preference in this spot lol. Definitely helps to know about them (I’m not a coffee drinker either)

I would do it. I probably woldnt send my kid in with it but that's about it.
I gave it to my sons Pre-K teachers, with the tag that said my kids is probably the reason you drink because he probably was!! 
it wasn't there only gift but I was pretty sure they drank wine and most likely appreciated it.

I have given bottles plenty of times and have received very gracious thank you's. I also have tons of friends who are teachers, and ALL of them hate the ornaments, mugs, candles, Bath and Body sets or anything personalized from that child. GC and wine is the way I go.

Nothing wrong with wine! Love the idea. Like others said I wouldn't put it in their backpack. I am at the school a lot so something I'd drop off.
Wouldn't mind a nice bottle of Tito's too!!
This year I did GC's to Nordstroms along with slipper socks bc I could never have enough of those.

My mom was a teacher. Some stuff was very meaningful... but she got tons of those “best teacher” things that would end up in the trash. She didn’t like scented stuff, especially soaps, so those were given away. She loved the gift cards esp to Barnes and Nobles so she could buy things for her class or indulge herself. She did like the handmade Christmas ornaments and still has those (but thinking back, they were handmade by parents who could bead).
I don’t think it’s ungrateful... my mom knew everyone meant well and a lot of time kids picked out the presents, which she thought was sweet. She really loved the handmade cards by kids who could afford presents. She always felt she helped those the most. There are preferences though when you get a gift!
Funny, only thank you gifts I’ve ever gotten professionally have been wine... and speaking from experience, the sweet spot for a nice bottle of wine is $15... so it’s reasonable. I think I will do this at the end of the year!

Think about how many mugs that is? or how many personalized gifts from students - I am taking about the teachers name WITH the students name on it, etc. Would you want to have that many of any of those? AND they get them at the end of the year as well. Most people just gravitate towards these gifts because they are cheap and easy, but it doesn't mean they are the most practical.
If you have 20 plus students in your class, and you get 10 mugs for Christmas AND then another 10 mugs at the end of the school year over a course of 20 years I don't think it makes you sound biitchy or ungrateful at all.

You said that they "hate" these gifts, which to me sounded like they were complaining, and that is what I reacted to. It sounded really callous and ungrateful actually. Parents spend their hard earned $$ on these gifts and are not under any obligation to gift teachers anything.

This is why I just stopped giving these gifts. So far they still let my kids attend school
