Thanks so much mommy's the the great feedback. I did buy a bag of organic carrots that I would like to start her off with. So basically I would steam it. once the carrots are soft I will add it to my Magic bullet with fresh water since I was reading that using the same water that you steam is no good for babies because of nitrates. Once it cools down I can add them to ice cubes but what than? Do I defrost all the cubes? I am excited to do this.
The only one that is really a problem is carrots, all the other foods you can puree with the water you steamed them with. I would then pour the puree into ice cube trays and once they were frozen, put the cubes into labeled ziplock bags. I had the little containers made for the baby food, but I thought the trays and bags were easier and took up lesss space in the freezer. To defrost them, I'd either leave them out for a couple of hours, or to do it faster, boil water, and then place the cube in a pan above the boiling water.

Re: Why make your own baby food??
i never froze any...just did it as i went along.
every 3 days, i would make a lunch batch and dinner batch. chopping and steaming only took 15 minutes. she would eat the batches for 3 days.

Re: Why make your own baby food??
I do both. When I have it or buy let's say a sweet potato I buy and make extra and freeze it for her. We do not a lot of fruit so I buy those from Gerber. It just depends on what we have in the house or eating that week. Baby food is the only thing that they do not add anything to, like salt, sugar, preservatives. SO they are very safe. I am sure it does not taste as good as fresh stuff so I try and mix it up!

Re: Why make your own baby food??
DD just started solids. I am using the jarred organic fruits/veggies now b/c yes the ingredients are just carrots and water (and I've tased all the veggies I've gven her so far and they have been good!). Plus right now she's only eating about a jar a day.
However, when she starts to really eat more, and move on to bigger stages of food I plan on making my own for the reasons others have mentioned.

Control - you can control the taste, amount, consistency, price.
I used to use organic fruits and veggies and could combine them to introduce new flavors.

taste experimentation with herbs and seasonings cost value less waste
I love cooking and preparing food. It was only natural that I prepare his food the way I prepare food for the rest of the family.

DD didn't really like the jarred food and I enjoyed making it for her. Something were applesauce and pears were a staple in my home so I would make up a batch a week

I didn't exclusively make their food, but when I did, it was generally to make certain purees more appealing. The butternut squash that I roasted and pureed, then added a touch of cinnamom to, was waaaaaay tastier than the thin squash puree you could buy.
But I also have zero problem feeding the kids jarred food. Like I said, some stuff I made, some stuff I didn't.
I just wanted to clarify one thing I saw in this thread:

For ex. Earth's best fruits all have vitamin c in the form of ascorbic acid added back into the fruit - doesn't fruit have vitamin C?
Ascorbic acid is added for its preservative value, not as a vitamin supplement. It keeps fruits like apples, pears etc from turning brown. If you buy bags of pre-cut apple slices, you will see the same ascorbic acid listed... otherwise the apple slices would be brown and gross.
Same

Hmmm this thread is making me want to give it a shot. . .
You really should. It is actually really fun and doesn't take too much time. Plus, you know it's fresh. I feel a little weird giving my baby food that has an expiration date for Dec. 2011!!
I do it mostly because of what a PP said. I do not eat my meals from a jar, why should my baby? I take the time to cook my meals, why shouldn't my child also have that luxury?
I do, however, always have some jarred foods in my cabinet just in case
ETA: I like buying quality organic fruits and veggies (haven't done meat yet). I feel more comfortable knowing where her food is coming from.

Because it is fresh. IMO you can't compare something fresh with something sitting in a jar on a shelf.

Hmmmm...when I called Earth's Best to ask where it was coming from that is not what they told me. Is this what you have been told or what you are guessing?

Re: Why make your own baby food??
I make my own bc I'm so worried w/ all the recalls lately. not sure how clean the factory is etc. For DS 1 I was working FT and gave him earth's best. but since then I heard the Vit C is from China (not sure if that's totally true) . so I just feel better making it myself. I aslo don't like the idea of DS food sitting in a jar for a year or two before he eats it

Re: Why make your own baby food??
ok So , I made carrots for my daughter and it was so EASY. I gave it to her and she made a face but ate all of it. The next day she wouldn't eat it. I tried to mix it with oatmeal and she ate a little. She loves her formula so I gave her that and the carrots and oatmeal in between. I feel like am forcing her to eat it. She really doesn't seem like she liked it. She look at it and keep her lips very shut. lol .
Anyone have this experience? I feel like carrots aren't that bad. I think they are sweet. I hope she is not picky ;o(

my advice is start with one fruit. let's say pears. no reaction to pears?
then add pears to carrots. try the carrots out then for reaction

Re: Why make your own baby food??
for me - it was about doing something for Emma. I had to take her to our sitter's house so i couldn't spend time with her (because i have to work)....so at least while she was there - she was having something that mommy made 'with love'.
does that make any sense?

Re: Why make your own baby food??
I asked the same question when DS was starting solids- now 3 month later I'm still making his food.
I started with the foods I didn't need to cook- bananas and avacodos. Then moved on to sweet potatoes, apples, pears, peaches, sweet peas and carrots. I mix all of these with oatmeal/BM or the fruits with yogurt. Avacodo banana puree is still his fav- it's so yummy! I do however buy those organic pouches for when I don't have something defrosted or ready to go- ella's kitchen, happy baby organic and plum organics are really good- they taste great!
We started meats but DH and I don't eat organic chic so I have to make a special trip to buy that for DS. So we haven't been consistent with giving meat. I'm still trying to figure out the pureed meat thing and what to mix it with- so far all I've got is sweet potatoes.

well i heard to start with one veggie for 4 days and than try for another one. i just feel like she is a picky eater. I wanted to do carrots first since its a sweeter veggie but not as sweet as a fruit that she wont like veggies later on..

Re: Why make your own baby food??
I see what you are saying. so, by the fourth day I should use another veggie but try the second one for 4 days to make sure she is not allergic to it. Than mix carrots with the second veggie. Ok but am hiding the taste of veggie. Does that mean i will have to do this all the time

Re: Why make your own baby food??
i've done both. jarred and homemade.
While most things tasted better fresh, there were a few things that just didn't taste right when i made it at home so i bought those ones.
Also when i have my MIL watching my DD she didn't get the concept of how to heat it up. She also didn't get the concept of how to make the cereal my DD needed for her reflux issues. So on the days my MIL watched DD we used jarred, since i knew my DD would be getting what she needed.

Re: Why make your own baby food??
Some of my reasons with Adriano were:
1- cheaper!!! You can make a ton of baby food and it costs less. Each jar of baby food can be 1.00 or better!
2- more variety, I have never seen beets, asparagus just to name a few in a jar. I can make so many varieties and combinations.
3- I know what conditions it was made in. I don't know what goes on in a factory.

I have read that it's cheaper, etc I just don't have the time or patience for it so Gerber it is for us. To me, time is money. Especially with a baby.
ditto... I'm sure making your own baby food is great, saves money, tastes better, etc
I'm a FTWM. My free time is with DS so the packaged Gerbers or Earth's Best it is. Easy to send to daycare too.

Re: Why make your own baby food??
I do it more for the stage 2 and 3 foods. It is much cheaper to make them this way, I can introduce different tastes, seasonings ect.
