Why do you live on LI?
For those of us who are on LI...
There's only 6 choices, so I picked what seemed to be the most popular reasons from the other thread.
For me, I'm in the too lazy/nervous about moving. I'm not overly worried about the other reasons, but I'd hate to move just to find out that I'm not that much better off, or I don't love the area that I moved to as much as I thought I would.

Why do you live on LI?
Have lived here all my life and really never seriously thought about moving anywhere else. My family is mostly here and that's what is most important to me. Although, I do think LI is one of the best places to live, too. Yes, the cost of living is high, but I love being close to the city, close to the beach, relatively close to skiing, and close to amazing healthcare. Will I move when I retire - in all likelihood, yes. But for now, I am content to be here

Why do you live on LI?
My family is here. We have all said maybe one day we will all move. I do like it here but one day we would love to live in Florida.

Well, technically Queens, but spend a whole lot of time "on the Island"
Job/Salary & Family/Friends.
Once our dads are passed, we'll figure out if we want to relocate to SC. We don't have to worry about schools or jobs because we will be retired, but medical will be a big factor in where we wind up.
Ideally we'd be snowbirds.

"Other" as it really is a combo of too lazy/scared and family.
For me - my Mom, Dad/Stepmom and brother are still here... but the rest of my sibs are elsewhere.
I'd move to NC by my sisters, but won't until my Mom is ready to leave. (and she won't be while my Grandmother is still alive).
For DH - all of his family is here and he knows we'll never see them if we move.
And then - we're relatively comfortable here, the "what if's" of jobs/home etc - is overwhelming enough to make the conversation ... just a conversation, not a reality.

i chose friends & family but i really could say any one of these!
i moved away for college - SC & then lived in DC for a year but on a recent college grad salary in a super expensive city, it didnt work
so i moved back
and never left again!

Was born here, stuck around, met ex DH who is from here (queens), my dad lived here (has since passed) and now i own a co-op have a good job that i like, and have joint custody
Would love to research moving but with adolescent kids and their dad being here not sure how i would leave

All of the above?
My family, friends, and job are here. I work in education so my license is only for NY and finding a job elsewhere is tricky. Also, I'm Jewish, and like knowing that I can find Kosher chicken and a Hebrew school for my children relatively easily.

A lot of the reasons. I moved to Long Island 7 years ago from being born and raised in The Bronx. I do love it where I am. Schools are great, area is great and a lot to do and DS loves it. I obviously wish houses and taxes weren't so expensive. My career is keeping me in NY until I can retire in a few years and what would make me move asap is NY weather

Why do you live on LI?
I don't want to be away from my family and I don't want to travel on holidays. I feel like if we moved away we would feel obligated to travel on holidays because we wouldn't want to spend them alone all the time.

We were both born and raised here, my family is all here but DH's is spread out over the country. We left after college and lived in FL for 4 years but came back because we wanted to be near family and friends. However, over the years it's become harder and harder to see family as much, same with many friends.
We decided a few years ago that we didn't want to be on LI forever, we wanted to try some place new and my DH wants to advance his career too and staying here makes that harder. We're just here at this point until we find the right opportunity/time/place to move. Hoping to be off the island by the end of the year, at the latest. We're actively working on that plan.

I don't live on LI but the only reason I live in NY is because of family and friends. If I could take everyone with me I would be out of here in an instant.

Combo reasons of job (salary), not wanting to pull the kids from school, and afraid of the change since this is all I've ever known. But I am ready for a new adventure.

Why do you live on LI?
Born and raised, went to college here, most of my family is here. We get so much help with DS between my mom and MIL. DHs industry only has opportunities near major cities, and I'm not moving to LA.

I chose salary & job. It's really both that and family & friends. But it's not me. It's my DH. I work remotely from home, so I can live anywhere there's good wifi. And I'm ok with living far from family. As it is my immediate family is about 2 hrs away
I would leave LI in a heartbeat

This is what my aunt, uncle and their five children did. They were done living here. Getting older. Decided on Florida. All 5 of her children and grandchildren picked up and went too. They weren't leaving anyone behind

Why do you live on LI?
My DH and I both work Civil Service jobs with decent salaries & pensions. My DH has over 20 years in the NYS retirement system and I have about 12, so it would be crazy for us to leave now.
Our plan is to retire as soon as possible (in about 19 years), move somewhere cheaper & take part-time jobs to supplement our income & hobbies (boating/fishing/the beach).
Of course that's just the plan...if our kids won't move we'll probably stay here forever. I'm ok with that...I'd like to go somewhere where we'll get more bang for our buck in our retirement, but I'll be content if moving OOS isn't in the cards for us.

Exactly this. I lived OOS for a few years. It was very lonely. I would love to move off the island but don't know if I could do it unless family also made the move.

Why do you live on LI?
For us it is a combination of things. My entire family lives on LI. No one moved away. Parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, we are all here. Schools are also important to us as my daughter is special needs and even though the services are not the best, it is better than most. She needs to stay here. We did research some other locations to move too for DH's job and the school districts were sorely lacking in what we needed them for.
