Why do you live on LI?

I grew up here so did DH. So we stayed for our families and friends

My dh and I tossed around the idea of moving to various places... Massachusetts ... New Jersey... Westchester... (obviously some of those are further than others).

Ultimately what it comes down to is, my AMAZING and super helpful parents live here. We started looking around in different parts of Westchester a couple years ago and were like.... What are we doing moving over a bridge from our babysitters??? My parents aren't just 'babysitters" though. I'm really close with them, as is my DS and my husband. We know that inevitably we'd see them less by moving.

We ended up moving from the south shore to the north shore, and I must say.., I absolutely love it. I love how pretty it is here, and how I can travel to see friends and it's not a "big deal" trip, the way I know it would become if tolls were involved. My FIL lives in NJ and truth be told, we see him maybe every other month, which isn't much to me. I love that we live in a gorgeous town with great schools, and the last couple days when I needed a hand while my DS wasn't well, my mom came right over.

I think it comes down to priorities.

Why do you live on LI?

Because of dh's job. But we got so sick of being here that he made a move to another company that will allow him to work from home and be out of state. He's much happier right now and we'll all be even better off when we move I'm sure. We don't have much family. The only fam I have will be making the move with us. It's a no brainer.

My parents. (They're aging and I know they're going to be needing me.) I tried to get them to move, but my dad won't budge. The rest of my family (and DH's family) and friends have all left the island. They're all in CT and PA.

Now we're in too invested in the school & community. We don't have to move, so we're staying put now. It sucks because my husband and I really don't want to live here.

I don't live on LI, but my entire family does. Positives of living on LI: Family and proximity to the city/beaches

We used to have jobs and family help on LI. Now neither of us work on LI and family will not help us so we left. We couldn't find a reason to stay.

I did other my parents are still here but I have feeling if I decided to move they would go with me. They plan on retiring and supposedly moving not sure though if they will actually do this. So family/friends is one reason, job/salary though I could probably get a transfer with my current job and I am nervous. I don't really like change and I would worry to much we wouldn't be able to make it, if we needed to find new jobs etc. Also my brother passed away and he is buried here and my parents bought plots for both of them to be buried with him and I have this guilt that I can now not leave cause they will be buried here. Its a dumb guilt I know but it seriously factors in to any decision if I could ever move.

DH has his business here and, due to the nature of his industry, starting a new business elsewhere could be tricky.

My family is all in Queens. I'd love to still be in Queens but the houses are insane- half a million dollars for a run down piece of garbage with no backyard that you could stick your head out the window and spit on the LIE. A cool million for anything halfway decent- like an attached, 3 bedroom (which one of those "bedrooms" is the size of a walk in closet) with a postage stamp sized yard made of broken concrete.

Obviously I'm a little bitter.

So LI was our best compromise. Yes, the taxes are higher and the commute a little longer, but it still works out better for us.
