What's your Toothbrushing routine with your 14 month old and older?

Can't seem to get the timing right with this. I just switched to a regular toothbrush instead of the finger thing.. so I want to get him used to going to the bathroom or mirro with me and teach him how to brush.. not sure when though? He drinks his last bottle around 6:30 and then goes to bed at 8:00 sometimes he is still finishing his milk right before bedtime..does it matter??? shouldn't I brush after he is done drinking???? I feel that he is way too tired and cranky by that time if we wait unitl he is done with the milk? kwim?

whats your toothbrush routine..where..how did you teach...what time??? etc.. thanks!Chat Icon

My DD is 2 but we've had the same routine for brushing her teeth since she was 1. Chat Icon About 5 min. for bed (she goes to bed at 8) I brush her teeth (after she's all done with all drinking and eating, especially her milk) but I don't take her into the bathroom. I always did it in the den where we hang out all the time. I just say "Time to brush your teeth" and she comes right over, plops down in front of me, and opens her mouth. Chat Icon I usually let her "brush" her own teeth after too so she feels like a big girl. She actually doesn't mind getting her teeth brushed so it's been easy with her.

I would move up his last bottle by a few minutes so you can brush his teeth a few minutes after and then get him to bed. You don't really want milk sitting on his teeth all night.

I've had the same routine for a while now...

dinner and then milk around 5:30ish
play
bath at 6:30ish
dress, cuddle and watch some TV on our bed till close to 7ish
brush teeth - he does this now, but sucks on the toothbrush a lot so DH tried and swishes it around here and there. When he's done he wants to put him toothbrush back in the holder. He also likes to stick it under the water too just to keep delaying it Chat Icon

book time with mommy (he gets so excited for this... grabs my hand and runs into his room from the bathroom. Shuts the door and goes to the armoire to get books) Chat Icon
then bedtime around 7:15ish

My dd is 14 months also. We just started with the real toothbrush too. We hold her in front of the mirror and we both hold the brush. Then I'll let go and let her do it for a minute or so. We do this about an hour before she goes to bed (after the bath). She still takes a bottle to go to sleep so she is still drinking milk after the fact... I am thinking of starting to do it in the morning too. My DD only has three teeth so far though, lol.

There is special "training" toothpaste that we use. It's safe to swallow

Lola is obsessed with brushing her teeth, so she started brushing when Bella does. They both brush their teeth in the morning and before bed.

Bella (3yrs) uses a regular flouride kids toothpaste
Lola (15 mths) uses a non-flouride training toothpaste

How did you start? Do you brush or does he do it or a combo? In front of mirror or not? Thanks!!Chat Icon
