Re: What's your take on this?

I read through most of the replies. I tend not to give money directly to people asking for it. Someone commented about buying bags of clothes etc. and someone else said they would give food and water. Even if it IS a scam, giving clothes or food/water to me is still not a big deal...clearly the kids who are sitting outside could benefit from a snack or something to drink and they are just kids, they aren't intentionally scamming anyone. If you give food or something to drink and it turns out it was a scam - well, you still did a good deed, and you didn't give money that then goes to pay for who knows what.

Yes, most definitely. I would give them food & water.

Even after reading all the posts on here that it's most likely a scam?

"Most likely" is the key phrase. We don't know the truth behind any of it. Some of these people may be scamming, but what about those who aren't? I would take the chance & help; a few dollars out of my pocket isn't going to break me. If it is a swindle, then shame on them.
This may sound foolish to some, but that's OK. Chat Icon

Is it impossible for someone to state an opinion without someone coming back at them?

You might not give food and water after reading its a scam, but don't question her to get her to change her mind just because YOU wouldn't do it.

I will never give anyone who is begging for money ever again- ONLY to the salvation army during the holidays.

I saw a family with 2 young boys sitting on the side of the target in Commack a few years ago. They stopped me asking for change because they needed to buy clothes and food for their kids. I told them I would give them my change when I came out. Instead, I spent close to $80 on clothes, diapers & pull ups, toys and snacks for the kids. I came out with 2 large bags and gave them to this family. When I got in my car I saw the wife walk in to Target with the bags, and walk out a few minutes later without the bags. I must have left the receipt in the bag, and she had the nerve to return everything and pocket the money!!! That made me SO mad, so I will never do anything like that again! Chat Icon

I would have agreed until I read the PP about how they turned around and returned everything for the cash. I'm a charitable person but I'd prefer to donate my money to organizations that I know are not scamming good samaritans, like Sophia's Cure.

I saw them too in Lake Grove by Marshalls. My aunt mentioned that she saw them by Costco in Holbrook. When my aunt saw them, he was standing directly in front of a factory or something with a "Help Wanted" sign in the window. How ironic.

I did not give them anything but I noticed he had lots of diapers stacked behind him.

I'm just saying, if you were actually out of food and someone went and got you clothes you wouldn't find a way to exchange it for food? Really? Trying to act all OMG they exchanged what I bought them when it's quite possible they were actually hungry is silly.

Beggars can't be choosers. And she did say she bought snacks. And it's not like the woman came out with other food instead. She came out with the cash.

So Target sells enough food now to go food shopping? If you were a beggar and had the choice between clothes and toys or exchanging them for the chance to get food, you'd choose the clothes?

Target has a lot of food actually (produce, cereal, bread, milk) and more than enough to keep them fed for awhile, if they really needed it. And the sign said they needed money for clothes. So yes, I still say Beggars can't be Choosers in this situation. They're begging for food and clothing, they got food and clothing among other things and still returned everything.

Re: What's your take on this?

I think you can spot a homeless person, for the most part. I'd likely give to someone who is clearly without a home. When someone is dirty and doesn't have clean clothes, who will hire them? I'm not saying that with the money they collect they are saving up for a nice suit but if they can get a meal, it helps.

Seeing someone dressed nicely and clean, holding up a sign that he lost his job? I wouldn't go for it. If you can make yourself presentable and have a place to go to clean up, you can go on job interviews.

If you feel that badly, give something small. If it will bother you more to NOT give, go with your gut. Chat Icon

I understand what you are saying, but the fact that the wife came out of the store and just kept the money is what bothered me. I really hope that is the reason she returned everything, but she did say she wanted clothes for her kids- which is exactly what I did. And as for the toys, it was a total of 5 books and some blocks because they were just sitting there looking miserable without anything to do. I can only hope she did the right thing and purchased food for her family, but from the vibe I got when I handed her the bags, I have a feeling that went straight in their pockets for something else.

I do 90 percent of my grocery shopping at Target, so yes, they have plenty of food to buy there. Again, if her kids needed clothing, why immediately return the new ones someone just bought you? Do you know this woman personally? Chat Icon

Smells REALLY fishy to me.

And yes, Target sells PLENTY of food (even if just cereal and carbs and juice, etc) to survive.
