What's your take on this?

i've seen a guy & family just like this - new sneakers too - at the Trader Joe's in Merrick, and on another day at the Shopping Plaza next door to this. First, he was standing with that sign, and an empty stroller, i didn't see the fam anywhere. Spooked me out. Then on another day, i saw him with the fam all standing there, so close to traffic. It made me mad that this guy was bringing his family out in this heat, subjecting them to that, and exploiting a kid like that. And on Merrick Rd. of all places. There is little to no foot traffic, no one stops because of the frogger-like conditions of the roadway. It all seemed staged.

Even if it wasn't, and he needs money - have wifey take your kid to a safer place!

Re: What's your take on this?

I haven't seen this yet, but if I see someone trying to scam money from people by making little kids and babies sit out in the heat I am going to call the police. Especially after reading all of these responses in this thread.

Even in the most dire of situations DH would NEVER EVER put me of DD in that kind of scenario. Ever. So in this case, I would not feel the slightest bit bad for these people because this is not how a REAL father and husband would try to scrape by and support his family.

Re: What's your take on this?

The family I see are man, woman, a young boy (3 or so) and she is holding an infant (10 months or so). I've seen them in front of BJ's entrance in Farmingdale during the week and Walmart Farmingdale on the weekends. I know this economy is terrible but there are ALWAYS some supports and resources to find ways to make ends meet. I think either they are unaware how to get the resources or have no work ethic and just want to resort to handouts.

I have never seen anyone give them money but would love to hear their "story" from them. I am very skeptical.

I wouldn't give a penny.

Guy is spending all day every day out there looking for handouts... obviously not funneling much time or energy into the job search.

Plus he's making his kids sit out there in the heat with him, just to win some sympathy bucks from the Target moms he's preying on.

No way.

They are def using different kids bc @ Bj's farmingdale , it was a toddler in a stroller and a girl around 5 or 6 rocking her doll.

Con artists, and they are probably coming from far away thinking people here have $$$$$ to throw away.

I never ever give $$ for this reason

Re: What's your take on this?

I'm a sucker. I give money to almost anyone with their hand out on the street.

I figure if I've given money to 10 people/families at least one of them was probably really in need and it was worth it to get scamme 9 times if I helped at least 1.

I frequent a large shopping center near my office on my lunch break.
For the past 2 weeks or so, I notice that every time I go (whch is a LOT)there is a man- probably in his mid 30s- standing in the parking lot of Target holding a carboard sign that says, "I lost my job, I have 2 kids, please help"
He always has his wife with him and one child- probably around 4 or 5. Today he had another child as well, in a stroller- probably 2 years old or under.
They wife and kids sit on the grassy area of the parking lot and play while he stands there with the sign.
I feel bad every time I see him- and especially bad when I see the little kids- but I am always leery to just give money to strangers.
I don't see anyone stopping or going over to them, but I'm only there for a short period of time as I drive through.

Would you stop and give them something?

I saw this a few times in Target shopping center in Commack and only yesterday saw them again.

My feeling is , why put your kids on a corner like that? Why are you not doing anything and everything to find a job and spend your day in a parking lot. I was turned off by it especially for the fact they had kids there.

I'm sorry, but my gut when I drive by them tells me it is all a scam.

What's your take on this?

I honestly do not give money to anybody, except the Salavation Army during the holidays. I am not sure who to believe so I like to donate to repuatable charities.

I wouldn't give them money. Would I feel horrible looking at those kids? Absolutely. But, there are plenty of people in need of assistance and to use your children as props to make people feel bad, doesn't sit right with me. Do what you have to do but having your children sit outside in the sweltering heat to make a buck is disgusting

ITA.

There are public assistance programs for those who really need it. I also think it's digusting to exploit children like that.

I saw this in Farmingdale. In the Stew Leonards parking lot. I feel bad for people having to resort to this. However, I often wonder.... Are they really poor? Or are they just trying to make extra money.

Re: What's your take on this?

It sort of reminds me of the Romani Gypsies around Europe. They also use their kids but they flat out rob people in addition to begging. I've been physically approached numerous times by young and old. One time, a "nursing" mother tried to steal my mom's wallet right out of her purse! The baby was right there between them and my mom had to swat her hand away! Mostly, it's kids around 8-10 years old trying to pickpocket.

To the OP, I don't give to people asking on the street, except when I worked in a coffee shop and we knew the local homeless people- we'd give them leftover sandwiches, etc. Otherwise, I'd donate money to a reputable organization that helps the homeless.

I will never give anyone who is begging for money ever again- ONLY to the salvation army during the holidays.

I saw a family with 2 young boys sitting on the side of the target in Commack a few years ago. They stopped me asking for change because they needed to buy clothes and food for their kids. I told them I would give them my change when I came out. Instead, I spent close to $80 on clothes, diapers & pull ups, toys and snacks for the kids. I came out with 2 large bags and gave them to this family. When I got in my car I saw the wife walk in to Target with the bags, and walk out a few minutes later without the bags. I must have left the receipt in the bag, and she had the nerve to return everything and pocket the money!!! That made me SO mad, so I will never do anything like that again! Chat Icon

Is it impossible for someone to state an opinion without someone coming back at them?

You might not give food and water after reading its a scam, but don't question her to get her to change her mind just because YOU wouldn't do it.

Settle down, I was curious if she read all of the posts on the thread, or just the first.

Yes, I have seen a family (Middle Eastern) several times in the Commack Target AND Walmart shopping center. The mother and kids are always sitting on the grass while the father stands holding a cardboard sign. I have never stopped nor have I ever been close enough to read the wordy sign.
