What were your not willing to compromise on when looking at houses?
For us...the house had to have a basement, a dining room and 2 bathrooms
ETA...We looked first by school district and wanted to be on a nice quiet street

Re: What were your not willing to compromise on when looking at houses?
A waterfront location. So many realtors showed us waterview instead of waterfront, where you could see the LI Sound if you looked through your neighbor's window, etc.
We didn't care about the house at all, just the waterfront location.

Re: What were your not willing to compromise on when looking at houses?
Our biggest must was one particular town - which is 3 square miles.
Other than that, we wanted a room for husband's cr#p - oops, I mean "man's room" and a nice piece of property.
We were all over the board with other musts.

Re: What were your not willing to compromise on when looking at houses?
we really needed a basement, We also wanted at least a 60x100 Lot. and an attached garage.
Oh it had to be Midblock, on a quiet street. away from any major roads or highways Also could not be a corner.
In 3 weeks we were able to get all that!
But we also knocked it down. so location was the most imporant, and good schools too

Re: What were your not willing to compromise on when looking at houses?
Location. We will only look in 5 towns in our area and we don't want to be on a busy street. We don't want to hear a lot of cars when we're outside in the backyard.
Other things that are a must for us: 2 car garage, 4 bedrooms (preferably on the same floor), 2.5 bathrooms and basement.

Re: What were your not willing to compromise on when looking at houses?
We're going to start the house hunt for our next house in the next year or two and the things we won't compromise on are:
must have eat in kitchen must have big yard must have CAC at least 4 bedrooms formal dining room basement and attic
school district is important, although not deal breaker since our kids are going to Catholic or private schools
Im guessing it'll be a long look for what we want

Re: What were your not willing to compromise on when looking at houses?
master bathroom-or room to add one right away 4 or more bedrooms or room to expand right away specific community that only has 800 houses quiet street basement and garage-we only got the basement but plan to build the garage in the spring. a fixer which allowed us alot of flexability because we were prepared to do a ton of work.

Same here.
It was our second house so we had a long list:
large eat in kitchen large formal diningroom at least one fireplace minimum 4 bedrooms (all on second floor) LR and Family room at least 2 1/2 bathrooms (one being guest on first floor, one being MB) at least 2 car garage basement
condition of the home and the major fixtures (heating, CAC, windows, finished basement) we wanted to do ourselves anyway. WE were looking for a house in the worst cosmetic condition.

Re: What were your not willing to compromise on when looking at houses?
Location - we only looked in one town.
I also think that it had to be a center hall colonial. Even though we didnt specifically say this, anything that i looked at that was not a CHC I almost immediately rejected.

Re: What were your not willing to compromise on when looking at houses?
We had a fairly large "must have" list before we started.
And all of it changed. You have to weigh pros and cons of each house.
The one we're buying only has 2 bedrooms but is in a better location than we thought we would get.
Everything else was a compromise to get into that neighborhood. The size of the house & plot too.
What we didnt compromise on was price. It's 50k less than our highest limit, so that was a huge draw to us also.
It's all relative and you learn to change your expectations, the longer you're out there looking. Unless you have gobs of money, which we didn't.

Re: What were your not willing to compromise on when looking at houses?
We wanted the following, some were town requirements and not so much house:
Town with a decent train line to NYC (and the ability to walk from our home)
A town with a downtown or a shopping area--we both hate going to malls all the time
Garage (DHs request)
Basement
3 bedrooms
At least 1.5 baths
Not on a busy road
That's about it. We did find one with all these things!
