What makes a thread drama vs a debate?
IMO, until the personal attacks come out, its a debate. But I think a lot of people consider any heated discussion drama.

Re: What makes a thread drama vs a debate?
from my perspective, it seems anytime some disagrees with someone else's opinion, the thread automatically becomes drama filled.

I see drama in two ways - one, is when someone posts a topic intentionally to get a rise out of people, and to "stir" the pot, without any intention to spark an intellectual debate.
Two, is when there IS an interesting topic posted, that people are debating, respectfully, but someone begins with direct, personal attacks, and immaturity. That's when a debate takes a turn for drama.
That's my assessment

Re: What makes a thread drama vs a debate?
Sometimes, whether I call a thread a debate or I call it drama will depend not so much on where the discussion goes but on what I perceive to be the OP's intention when starting the discussion. I am not saying that this is the way that I should think about things. It is just what happens, especially if I do not have time to read every post.

Re: What makes a thread drama vs a debate?
I posted this before. I believe that there are so many posters here that call any discussion that is going on as debate. I think people see two sides of a subject being consistantly discussed on one thread and say "ooh the drama" (maybe there is a three page minumum for them to say that? ) It's drama when there is not an intellictual point or counter point made, when threats are presented and many times it turns into drama because someone either calls it drama or posts a picture insinuating it is drama

Is that offensive? I ask because I use it all the time but never meant it in a mean way I always mean it like, HUH? or in a polite phrasing, could you please explain?

It's debate as long as there is mutual respect for other's points of view.
When you start personally attacking someone for disagreeing with you then it turns into drama. That's when I take my toys and go home. ITA. And making irrelevant things relevant. Like, saying things like you like banana ice cream so I cannot respect your comments. That sort of thing. Or assuming there is NO WAY someone knows as much as or more than you....that is always a good way to make a good thread turn bad.....

ITA!
I think it's perfectly fine to discuss different POVs but when personal attacks start, then it's drama.

Re: What makes a thread drama vs a debate?
I think it generally gets ugly after a few of these and when people drag a lot of crap from old arguments/drama into the thread that have nothing to do with the topic at hand.

This is when you leave the thread and Ron comes and magically whisks it away.

I disagree- I think it's more tongue-in-cheek. I guess that's at least my intent when I post it.

see that is the kicker. Most of the times when someone posts these "drama inciting" emoticons, it gets misinterpreted. You man mean in a tongue in cheek way, but not everyone does, I am sure
