I look for a registry. Usually the info isn't on the invite but if you search a bit they're typically easy to find.

I dislike giving cash for an engagement party, I'll save that for the wedding.

This. If there's no registry, I would still choose a tangible gift .... a vase, a frame, a serving platter, etc.

depends on where it is. If it's a backyard bbq type of thing, I usually get riedel wine glasses or something from their registry if they have set up one already. If it's an engagement party at a venue, I usually give $75-100.

what kind of gift do you give for an engament party?
A non-cash gift. I've heard of many people having engagement parties for the sole purpose of funding their weddings (not saying that's what this couple is doing) and it rubs me the wrong way so I always do a gift. My fave is a basket with champagne flutes, champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. I've also done pasta bowls/pasta fork/colander/fancy pasta and assorted beers/glasses/personalized bottle opener

I'd sooner give cash than spend money on something the couples don't like/need/want. Money is being spent anyway, why not just write a check? Who cares why they are having an engagement party. Nobody is forcing people to go.

DH and I got some strange engagement gifts. We didn't have an engagement party, but I would have LOVED a basket with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries!
My grandfather used to call engagement parties "fundraisers" lol. He always refused to go to them 
I usually give cash because honestly, it saves me time and effort lol

Normally I'd agree but I've had people tell me they want cash 'to pay for the wedding' when asked where they registered. I usually don't care about that stuff but it just kind of bugs me. I might just be a Debbie downer though so don't mind me
ETA I probably spend more on the actual gift then I would give in cash and I put a lot of thought into it to make it cute.

I always give cash. It is easy and it is what they most likely need anyway. I give a gift off their registry for the shower.

My go to gift is toasting flutes. You can spend anywhere from $25-$250 on a set (depends on brand etc). Usually I have spent in the $100 range.

we didn't have an engagement party. some people still sent us actual gifts and some gave us money. to be honest i got so many frames through the course of our engagement that i didnt have room for all of them and some were not my style. . unless you know their style enough to pick out frames, flutes, and other things, i would just give cash or a gift card or definitely include a gift receipt! . if they choose to use the money to "fund" their wedding, so be it. i know the cash was appreciated but not our source of financing for the wedding.
