Re: What items are unique to LI?
OK, I'm going way back for this one but....
Remember way back when you were dating someone in high school and they gave you an "ankle bracelet" that you put on a longer chain and wore around your neck. I had one and we added our names to it. It was "my name" then the ankle bracelet part, then "his name". I think our "date" was on there too somewhere, I just can't remember.
That is sooo Long Island. It looked rediculous anywhere else.
Sometimes I thing us LI'ers are in our own world....

Re: What items are unique to LI?
Back in the day, as a freshman in college, I could spot my fellow LIers from a distance because of our socks.
Apparently, wearing your jeans tucked in your bulky socks didn't fully make it to New England.

Dairy Barn
This is a good one! People from out of state (even upstaters) are in awe when they see a Dairy Barn and find out that it's basically a drive-thru grocery store!
They have always had them in Miami too - they are not called Dairy Barn (Farm Stores instead) but they are the same!

Re: What items are unique to LI?
One of DS's new shows (reading related, but don't remember the name of the show) has a Moby Duck "Great White Duck" segment, spoofing on Moby D!ck. They use the Big Duck as their Great White Duck prop, so people all over the country "know" about it, even if it's only little kids and parents, and they probably don't know where it is, either....

It's on the way to the hamptons, when you head down south from Riverhead. Now I think it's a tourist center or something but it used to be a fur trader or something like that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_Duck
Suffolk County owned and maintained it for the last 19 years or so. Southampton Town had it moved back to it's original location recently.
Originally used to advertise ducks for sale at the owner's duck farm (makes sense... )
Here's a pic of my PT Cruiser in front of the duck 3 years ago. Image Attachment(s):
