Who knows?
Don't drive yourself crazy with that stuff. Maybe if I went a significant amount of time w/o feeling the little guy, I would.
But then again, I'm a hot dog eating, caffeine and beer drinking ***** of a mother, so you may not want to listen to me.

To detect fetal movement. Fetal movement is a reassuring sign that the baby is ok and doing well. Most women, especially first time moms will know when their baby is active and will realize there is a dec. in fetal movement without doing a fetal kick count.
ETA: Typically it is not necessary to do. Pregnant women who often complain of feeling a decrease in fetal movement are usually given this assignment.

My SIL was doing that and making herself crazy, she called her Dr. in a panic saying that the baby wasn't moving enough.
The dr. saw her determined everything was fine, then listened to my terrified SIL worry about the million things wrong with her pregnancy. Her Dr. then banned her from the internet for the remainder of her pregnancy
