What do you wear to a closing??
Seems like a funny question, but really? Do I have to get all dressed up?

I don't know what the right answer is to this, but I wore what I would wear to work. I wore a skirt and a nice shirt.

I'm confused- you GO to a closing in NY. Here in CA, we go a few days before closing to sign a zillion documents at the escrow office and that's it. Then the realtor just drops off the keys the day you close.
How do you do it in NY?

well this will be my first one so i dont really know! We have an appointment and both parties show up and sign the documents there. I think we get the keys at the end of the signing?

i've been to a lot of closings, not my own and some people do dress up. (nice shirt and pants usually, not a suit or anything. )Me personally I am not going to dress up for mine coming up in a few weeks. it's a long time to be sitting there in "fancy" clothes. i will be going in a t-shirt and shorts. i mean i am paying these people to do their job-- i could be there in my pjs. i wouldn't go that far but i'd say go comfy.

NY is always 10x more complicated than any other state. in most other states you don't even need a lawyer, my SIL who lives in WI was buying and selling last summer the same time were and her process was so much easier and with a lot less people involved for a comparable house.
We kid her that she met a guy on the street corner with a sign that said, "house for Sale" she gave him money, he gave her keys and they moved in the next day. It was a like more like that than the way it is here.
Oh, and in MA, a closing can't happen until the house is completely empty. the buyers walk through a completely empty house, then go to closing and take possession the same day. None of this walk-through with the other persons stuff there or closing and renting back for a few days. No closing until the seller is out and the place is broom swept. It's great because sellers can't leave any junk behind.

I wore dress casual, don't remember what DH wore  - I don't like to be the worst dressed in the room LOL
I had it in my head that we needed to look decent, probably same line of thinking like I always thought you had to dress up to take a flight, I'm guessing my mother told me that
I'm sure it doesn't really matter.

And NY is an atty state. So every one at the table (i.e. buyer(s), seller(s) and bank) are represented by council. It can make for some crazy closings because sometimes they wait until the closing to iron out the final details or there is tension between the parties.
(I work at a title company and I have heard people fighting in the background while I am on the phone with the closer.)

We had to do this in NJ too when we closed on our house. Actually, the sellers weren't there because they were still packing the moving truck at the time of our closing, before they went to their new house closing that same day. Their Atty, had POA to sign for them.
Oh, and we wore shorts and t-shirts, it was a HOT day!

I closed at 3pm last Monday when it was 90 degrees and humid. I spent all morning packing and broom cleaning the house I sold with no AC. I was wearing GAP gauchos and a tank. I was sweaty and pretty sure somewhat stinky. Nobody cared!!!
So the answer is - whatever you're going to be comfortable in signing your life away!!!!

It's funny b/c I didn't plan a special but I do remember what I wore. I was 5 months preggo so I had a maternity alphet on. I guess it's one of those days you don't easily forget.

Agreed and also in NY you don't have to be present for the closing. It can be done by mail or via proxy, it's just so freakin complicated in NY that most people go to the closing table.

I wore a sun dress and DH wore khaki's and a button down...but we like to dress up.
We were in and out within an hour - we seriously had the smoothest closing ever (according to everyone involved!) Our house was an estate sale and the executor was also the attorney for the estate...then there was the title person, our atty and the bank atty - and the REA was there b/c she had a vested interest as well. Additionally, our bank was amazing to work with - we didn't ned to initial anything it was just a straight forward signing.
