We always called it a pacifier, which Joseph called "Fire". Not convenient in public places when he would scream "Fire, Fire!"
We try to call everything by it's proper name. I don't even like if my kids say "doggy".

 that gave me a chuckle. That is too funny. I imagine yelling fire may be a little scary to people.  He's so cute

My sil's mother used to call it a Zookie Zuk. My family used to be like what the heck is a zookie zuk.

DH calls it a bippy or binky

we call it paci.
Kevin calls it te-te (his word for paci - not sure how it came about).
We also have been known to call it plug as well.

Yeah, well, Ava was crying while MIL was holding her the other day (naturally I'd cry too!), so I went to put the binky in her mouth, and MIL turned the baby away from me and yelled, "I don't NEED the CHEATER!" I was like, "That's right, you don't anymore!" And I snatched Ava from her
