nothing surprised me more than when the price of oil skyrocketed.

We bought our home in late 2002 and was paying $1.29. The next year it was 2.19..then $2.59! Yikes! Talk about a re-assessment of affordability!

This is exactly what surprised me I never thought to lock in until it was too late.

A good surprise was when I actually took down the ugly wallpaper the wall underneath was in good shape I was afraid of what they were hiding!

Re: What cost surprised you the most -

Yup, that's why I did all the painting myself Chat Icon ... the most suprising cost for our renovations was the electrician. We totally gutted a kitchen, took down a few walls, put up a few walls, etc., and yet, somehow, the recess lighting ended up costing more than anything else, including our kitchen cabinets! The highest water bill I had was $12.00 and that was really 2 quarters because DH forgot to pay it the previous one.

All the "little" (non furniture) things to get the house set up. We didnt take anything with us from NY.

New house, new stuff.

So things like a toaster, can opener, toilet bowl brush, plunger, coasters, cleaning supplies, shelves for the garage, etc....

It's really amazing how such little items can have such a big bill. Chat Icon

We also put in wood floors...900 sq ft. Erf! What surprised me were the little extra costs that had us end up 10% over estimate. But they say its normal to overrun estimates...still....erf!
