What cost surprised you the most -
after you purchased your home?
For me, it was the cost of hiring a professional painter.... I had no idea paint could be so expensive!!!!

Re: What cost surprised you the most -
I think all the little "surprises" that popped up along the way.
As far as a regular expense, I would have to say Landscaping Services and our Gas/Electric bill!

*After* the purchase? I'm still spinning from THE purchase
Honestly, I haven't felt shock yet from anything...the floors have been the most expensive project thus far. Unless you count spending $300+ on paint for ONE room. No, that didn't include brushes - just the paint, tape and plastic Thankfully my FIL is a (retired) professional painter.
Oh and over $2k for a washer & dryer and then an additional $400 for the hook-up and incidentals.
OK, maybe I'm in shock and I just don't know it?!

Oh that was another one - the washer and dryer. Somehow after the hook-ups and delivery and extended warranty - my $1700 washer and dryer cost $2500!!! How does that happen?

Nothing really.
I did a 6 figure "Extreme Home Makeover" in 4 months. I remember in one weekend alone we spent $29,000 on materials.
I knew everything going in as I had some previous experience with flips and taking care of a house before. The price we offered reflected all of the $$$ we would have to spend.
In time, the "price shock" will lessen.

Yeah, its really ridiculous.
Most of them don't do that great of a job, only two coats even if sometimes a third is needed.
We got quotes to paint our house, just out of curiosity... a lot of extra moulding and every time you change to another color they charge you. All were over 11K. Yeah, whatever So we spent 9 weekends painting before the floors were done so we could move in.

Re: What cost surprised you the most -
Our biggest expense so far has been updating the electric.
However, whenever we go to home depot its $300 here, $400 there.

Re: What cost surprised you the most -
I think that the landscaping was one cost that really blew me away. Had we gone with a professional it would have cost $5,000. The guy up the block hooked us up completley and leveled out our property for nothing and also spread the soil and fertilizer. All we had to pay for was materials. That was huge!!!

Re: What cost surprised you the most -
All the "little things" are insane!!
After the brokeness of buying the fridge, microwave, washer & dryer came the "updates" and getting new fixtures, paint, landscaping, etc.
Thank God my BIL has a construction biz and painted our kitchen for free (and free paint too) and thank God he did our deck for free.
Landscaping will be mucho $$, so that will wait.
Getting the patio set-up...the stainless grill, the furniture, etc.
Termite control is super expensive...montly alarm, exterminator, etc. bills add up.
It's been a struggle balancing it all, but we're blessed to have a home and even more blessed to have a "newer" home. So no complaints. Just plain brokeness.

Re: What cost surprised you the most -
nothing surprised me more than when the price of oil skyrocketed.
We bought our home in late 2002 and was paying $1.29. The next year it was 2.19..then $2.59! Yikes! Talk about a re-assessment of affordability!

Re: What cost surprised you the most -
Definitely our first oil bill. I could not believe how expensive it was. That was almost 3 years ago when oil was considered "cheap" by today's prices.

Re: What cost surprised you the most -
definately the washer/dryer- even though we got free hookup and went with a cheaper model front loader is was still 1500.
Putting in our master bath is going to be really expensive too- I wish we would have financed more and put less down to have the money for these things.
Luckily things like painting, our gardener and even a maid when I am working full time again are surprizingly cheap due to all the excess of labor in CA. Anyone who is against immigration should take a look at their gardener out here. They only charge us 40 a month to mow and trim bushes. It definately helps.

Wow is right! We kept the guy who was cutting for the previous owner and he charges $45 a WEEK just to mow - trimming, seeding, fertilizing is all extra! We switched to another guy who charges $35 a week (again, just to mow). $40 a month would be dreamy

I know- CA is the best when it comes to this stuff. A maid will only be 120 a month!
