Wearing red to a wedding?

My coworkers were discussing this a few weeks ago. I said I wanted to wear a red dress to a wedding and they all told me that it is rude because you will take attention away from the bride. I have never heard of not wearing red to a wedding (only not to wear white). Are they right?

Re: Wearing red to a wedding?

I wearing red to a wedding tomorrow.
My mother is wearing black and my family was telling her black is rude. I told her black is elegant. Even bridesmaids wear black now.

Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable.

The only color I wouldn't wear to a wedding is white (meaning all white) any other color I think is just fine.

My BMs wore red, and about 3 guests also had on red - I didn't care at all, and I've never heard it takes away from a bride. I don't think ANYTHING can take away from a bride on her wedding day. Chat Icon

my BMs wore red too... i think people just like to come up with their *ideas* of how each color symbolizes something or takes away from the bride. HELLO shes the bride... clearly, people will recognize her Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Wearing red to a wedding?

even though red isn't a favor of my colors i don't think it's a problem wearing red to a wedding. i've been to weddings where i've seen women wearing red dress. i've never heard of that (it'll draw atrraction from the bride) now wearing all white would be a no no. go for it! i'm sure you'll be looking fly! good luck with finding a pair of shoes to match. do you have a pic of the dress if you wouldn't sharing?

I was annoyed that my SIL wore a red hoocky dress to my wedding, but if anyone else would have wore red I would have been okay with it.

She is an attention getter, and could not deal with the fact that her younger brothers wer btoh married before her.

Re: Wearing red to a wedding?

I've never heard of that.... BUT.....

We had 300 ppl at my wedding. A good friend of mine brought a date and she was wearing a red dress. Every single person I've talked to or seen since my wedding 6 months ago asks me the same question : "Who was the girl in the red dress?" Everyone noticed her! Even I noticed her and I had never met her until my wedding day.

It's an old school thing. Traditionally, red was, well, the color of strumpets.
And black was reserved for mourning, so wearing it to a wedding generally meant you disapproved.
