Weaning off the pump

DD is going to be 1 in two weeks. She is still currently EBF, but I'm in the process of transitioning to whole milk. Since I've been needing less BM for her bottles, I'd like to start weaning my pumping sessions at work. Currently, I nurse her in the am and pm and I pump twice at work. What's the best way to cut out those pump sessions? Do I just cut one out per week? I cannot wait to be done pumping!!

Weaning off the pump

I just dries up! Lol i was EP my BM. I just gradually stopped a session a day for a week or so then pumped less amount following week & so on. I would just either pump less per session or skip 1 daily.

Drying up was painful at first so get cabbage ready :)

Re: Weaning off the pump

I just got one out a week and w/in 2 weeks I was done pumping. My output had been slowing from 12 months on anyway and so I really had very little discomfort.

Re: Weaning off the pump

Thanks for the helpful replies! I am going to continue to nurse her in the am/pm for now. I mainly just wanted to stop pumping at work during the day.

Weaning off the pump

I initially tried to give DS whole milk at 12 months and he wanted nothing to do with it! I was so over pumping; but had to continue pumping until about 13 or 14 months. I gradually mixed his BM with WCM until eventually there was more WCM. Once I knew he was drinking just the plain WCM then I cut my 3x pump to 2; then just to 1 to alleviate the fullness. Then 1 day i just decided not to pump. I was a little uncomfortable and leaked on the way home but after that day I never pumped again. Never had any issues or required cabbage leaves etc.

this is not the case for everyone, esp if you're not EP.

i stopped pumping at work gradually, cutting sessions out. i felt full at times, but after each pump session i cut out, it took about a week to adjust. i did get some clogs and a crack and i should have done it slower but i was impatient (14 months and SO DONE with pumping!) now the twins nurse whenever they want and i have no issues with supply. after a year of building up your supply, as long as you've had no supply issues in the past, you should be fine with nursing on demand.
good luck!
