Sorry I don't see how you should be reimbursed. They had to tow your car in order to plow. Are they going to plow around your car?
Everyone & their mother said stay off the roads. If you had to drive (whether you we're required to be out or not), you are doing so at your own risk.
This is a little uncalled for. I am a NYC teacher and there is NO early dismissal in NYC public schools. We left at 3 and didn't make it home until 7. Many of my friends didn't make it home until almost 9 and one had to abandon their car. Is that their fault? NO. It's nice for people to say stay off the roads, but then there is something called reality and some of us had no choice.
If I were a NYC teacher living on LI I would have called in sick that day. No way would I risk my life for any job! Sometimes you just gotta live with the choices you make...not blame the gov't/schools/bosses etc
I'm not a teacher, but I have lots of family members who are NYC teachers. Pretty sure you can't just call in and take a sick day. You need a doctors note. There are no 'personal' days when you are a teacher.

Just so you know you can call in and take a sick day(I did), we get 7 sick days and 3 personal days/year. If you are absent more than three consecutive days than you need a DR's note.
I was a fortunate one who opted to stay home Friday since I travel from Medford to Queens. Thank God I made that decision. Feel SO bad for everyone!

call 631-775-2001. This was just on news 12 for the Person who can't find their car.
p.s. N.J. Closed their highways or maybe it was Boston. If your car got stuck, you got it towed AND a hefty fine along with your tow fees. Your car, your responsibility unfortunately.
I would accept that, but they ddn't close any roads until Friday night, late, around 9:30-10:00.

That is absurd and I wouldn't pay it. I might pay with a cc and then call and put a hold on it just to get my car back but I wouldn't give them my money, at least not that much!

How is it that everyone expected the roads to be plowed continuously on Friday night while the snow was still coming down at a rate that they could not keep up with?
I have to agree. I see both sides. By the time they "cleared" a road, they'd have to turn right back around and start again. I'm in Queens and I shoveled when I arrived home at 4:00 PM. By the time my DH got home at 5:00, you could not tell that I even picked up the shovel. And that's in Queens where we didn't get hit nearly as hard.
I also agree that it's not that easy to just "call in sick." My job gives us a really hard time whenever we call in sick even though we're given ample sick/personal/vacation time. We get it, they just get mad when we USE it. As someone who is struggling to make it, I'd have gone into work (and did!) for fear that I'd be docked a day's pay. And look at that, some city workers WERE docked for the 2010 storm even though there was NO public transportation available and single occupant cars weren't allowed over bridges and tunnels.
It's nobody's fault and it sucks all around. It sucks getting stuck with this bill, it sucks for the tow truck drivers, it sucks for the city workers, it just SUCKS. (PS- Man I am glad we're allowed to say sucks now!)
Personally, if you have any proof at all that you were there earlier trying to pick up your car, I'd try and dispute the charges for the extra days. I know you'll get stuck paying something, but maybe it'll be a little less.
Good luck!
ETA: And it's true, I wasn't expecting ANY snow until the evening. It was supposed to be rain all day! When I woke up, there was no snow. I showered, got ready for work, and left my house, there was about an inch of accumulation already. I was very surprised.

And again, if every teacher did this what would happen to the kids and the schools on that day? Sure I could take the day. And if every teacher who lived on Long Island and had a long commute did this they would over crowd classrooms and burden the teachers that were there with 50 kids in a classroom.
Sorry that I am responsible and care about my job and students.

You know what? Every teacher, and every employee for that matter, that could have should have just called in sick that day to send a message to schools that they need to heed the warnings. Sometimes I feel that they just think about getting the kids home who live IN the town, not the teachers who travel far. Again, all employees should be taking better responsibilty for the health and safetly of their employees!!

Absolutely uncalled for! My DH was one of those people. His job did not let them out early. It must be nice to live in a perfect world!

Being a martyr is very unbecoming. You are attacking everyone who says something that you don't want to hear. We get it, you're so much more responsible than people who chose not to put themselves in dangerous situations.
Really a martyr? I don't think she is being that at all and I think calling her that is unnecessary. The majority of us went to work. It was raining. Every single one of the teachers in my building was at work that day because it is our job and generally people don't call out for rain. The snow wasn't supposed to start until that evening and we are out a little bit after 2. I really couldn't see saying to my principal sorry gotta leave because I have a long ride home....so does everyone else in my school and again it was raining in Queens at 215 when I left. It is unrealistic to say to people should have called out, they should have known how fast the snow was going to come down. Nobody knew it was going to happen that fast. It's not about being a martyr, it is about being responsible. I'm sure if we had all called out then people would have talked about those "lazy" teachers being afraid of a little snow. Seems like no matter what we do it is always wrong.
My opinion of her on the post is that she's been attacking anyone who offered different scenarios that could have avoided dangerous conditions. The tone of "being responsible" makes her sound like she's a victim. I just don't buy that attitude. I really don't. I would have never called anyone who didn't go to work and/or left early lazy AT ALL. To me, THAT is being responsible. We have different viewpoints, simple as that. I am not going to get into a back and forth with you, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

I was very happy I'm a SAHM on that day. It snowed earlier than we were expecting. I was thinking if I were at my old job, they make everyone stay until it becomes dangerous. If you do leave, the amount of $hit you have to deal with is unbelievable. The economy is bad and private sector lets you know better not to step out of line. Some companies allow you to work from home, most do not.
As for teachers, they can not leave because the children's parents can not leave early. It's a domino affect. Many people have to work in the city , that is where the $$$ is. Anyone that can not understand that lives in some kind of bubble.

FYI...the driving ban in Boston...the fine is 3000 or a year in jail for what its worth. The city knows this and proactively give employers a chance for people to get home. Once the ban hits, and you get pulled over, its a very bad bad day. This is not only for the safety of the people but to let the plows do some work instead of worrying about cars on the road.

Wow. Didn't realize how much longer this went on. Thank you for explaining what I meant further. And I never said I was more responsible than anybody, just that I was being responisble. It wasn't called for in the morning.

And may I add I am far from a martyr or victim. I got home safely. Took a long time, but made it home. I was offering my sympathy to the OP who is being taken advantage of. And I did not attack anybody I just offered an explanation as to why some of us could not avoid being on the damn road!

Re: was anyones car towed from the lie due to nemo?
Hopefully this is a moot point bc the article is correct and they are trying to take advantage.
I am sure this is not a popular answer but...
When I worked in NYC I worked with people who commuted from all over suffolk, nassau, westchesterand farther north, CT, and NJ. I was always lucky because I never needed it but we all had an old change of clothes, tooth brush etc in a bag at our desk. Some had to take a train followed by a long drive. They all had numbers of hotels in various areas (near work, near train stop etc). Most of these people were paycheck to paycheck but the had backup plans for picking up kids and if it was really bad they got a room / shared a room. It was safer, and in this case would have been cheaper than then $500 charged for the tow. Or they used a personal or vacation day. DH kept the name of a place when he worked in white plain in case we felt it wasn't safe to come home bc he couldn't just leave. Or he took a vacation day.
I know it stinks. People can't just leave their jobs and they have kids but the ones I knew either took a day they didn't want to take bc they didn't have family or they arranged for a family member to help and they stayed.
The good news is that this is not a frequent occurrence we have what one or two major snow or hurrines a year if that. When was the last time the LIE closed? Sometimes there are things past our contro. I'm sure your families would prefer you safe than our in the storm and you are 100% right you can't always just leave your job.

oddly enough i thought i posted this on the families helping families board, I do not recall in my post asking what you thought of my situation. I am amazed at the amount of people who post on these boards and spew such negativity.

Re: was anyones car towed from the lie due to nemo?
In regards to the OP, I don't see how you can get reimbursed for the tow. It was weather related and an unfortunate side effect of a storm that came full force sooner than expected. In a situation like this, there just isn't anyone to blame or put the responsibility on..besides Mother Nature of course, and good luck getting her to pay.
I imagine that unless there is some kind of federal funding that was approved for people to submit for like there was after hurricane Sandy, you just have to suck it up and pay to get the car out. And I imagine you want to do it sooner than later because don't they charge you more for each day the car is there?
