Re: was anyones car towed from the lie due to nemo?
How is it that everyone expected the roads to be plowed continuously on Friday night while the snow was still coming down at a rate that they could not keep up with? Then what, we'll complain about paying workers overtime to do the job? This was basically an Act of G-d and I don't think that they could have kept up with the snow as it was coming down, no matter how high our taxes are in NY. I'm more unhappy that people were stuck without bathrooms and warmth & I actually think there should have been helicopter rescues but their cars are secondary to that concern.

Sorry I don't see how you should be reimbursed. They had to tow your car in order to plow. Are they going to plow around your car?
Everyone & their mother said stay off the roads. If you had to drive (whether you we're required to be out or not), you are doing so at your own risk.
This is a little uncalled for. I am a NYC teacher and there is NO early dismissal in NYC public schools. We left at 3 and didn't make it home until 7. Many of my friends didn't make it home until almost 9 and one had to abandon their car. Is that their fault? NO. It's nice for people to say stay off the roads, but then there is something called reality and some of us had no choice.
If I were a NYC teacher living on LI I would have called in sick that day. No way would I risk my life for any job! Sometimes you just gotta live with the choices you make...not blame the gov't/schools/bosses etc
Wow...

Are you kidding me?? Call in sick for what everyone thought would be rain untill 9pm. Sorry but I am not a teacher but i do have a job that I take seriously and I do not just call in sick whenever i feel like it. What if every teacher called in sick. What about the kids. The schools should have closed early! Dont blame people who are responcible and take thier jobs seriously!!
Thank you!!
And Aries I didn't blame anyone. I said the price wAs high and was just explaining why some of us were on the road.

Unfortunately, if you're an NYC teacher it's not a great time to just take days, no matter what the weather. I was lucky to have an understanding principal when I taught in the city, but not everyone is so fortunate and even something that seems like common sense, trying to get home so you don't get stranded in a storm, could put a big mark against you.

Re: was anyones car towed from the lie due to nemo?
http://www.newsday.com/long-island/storm-stranded-more-than-200-cars-on-lie-1.4609067
... The county is paying tow truck drivers a flat rate to move vehicles out of the roadways, an effort that is being supplemented by local and state police, officials said. Motorists will not have to pay for moving their vehicles, they said.
A Suffolk County police spokeswoman also said vehicles that motorists left behind will not be impounded.
About 200 vehicles were stuck on the LIE during the blizzard, authorities said, with a particularly bad stretch between exits 50 and 60 in both directions. Many vehicles became stuck at Exit 63 in the area of Farmingville, Medford and Holtsville, where some of the Island's highest snow amounts registered. ...
I would definitely look into this....

was anyones car towed from the lie due to nemo?
the snow is an act of mother nature...Its not Suffolk County's fault nature decided to produce a 5 inch per hour snow fall at one point. Maybe if all the cars had pulled over to the shoulder when they felt they couldn't drive anymore it wouldn't have delayed the plowing so much.
Its not Suffolk County's fault if you decide to take a job with a longer commute to the city, and don't plan alternative transportation that day- like taking a train that day when the signs on the parkway said the night before " do not drive int he PM Friday". My dh looked at the forcast Friday morning and it talked about switching over to snow by 3pm if not sooner- thats the point make a judgement call and say you need a half day.
Its not Suffolk's fault if your employer doesn't let you out early, and its not your employers fault if you don't tell them you don't feel safe with the weather conditions and need to take a half day for the PM. Some people in our insurance office worked from home Friday.

It may not be Suffolk County's fault that I have along commute, but it is NOT my fault that my school is not accessible by train. It is NOT my fault that the economy is bad or that it is difficult to find teaching jobs in places that would be easier. It is NOT my fault that although 90% of the teachers in my building did express that we wanted to leave early Mr. Bloomberg made the decision to stay open.
The only fault I have then is being a dedicated teacher. People should try to remember this the next time they complain about how much their child's teacher is absent in any givven year. Some of us are there no matter what. I have gone in sick, with dental pain, the day after I run my yearly marathon I hobble in, and I go in even if it is expected to snow later. And AGAIN, I didn not complain about anything. I merely expressed that the price they are charging is unfair.

So let me get this straight.
I PAY you to do your job - that is, sand, salt and plow the road so it is safe. You don't do your job, causing my car to get stuck. So now I have to pay AGAIN.
Sounds like they got a good racket going on there...
This isn't a very fare statement. This was a severe act of mother nature that made it impossible to keep up on the plowing. If I took your statement and changed a few words, watch how up in arms people will get.
So let me get this straight.
I pay you to do your job - that is, teach and inspire children so they grow into educated young adults. You don't do your job, causing me to hire a tutor. So now I have to pay AGAIN.
That isn't a fair statement for me to make because there are many more circumstances that play into teaching, just like there were many more circumstances that played into the plowing of the roads.

Re: was anyones car towed from the lie due to nemo?
I think this state needs to make a law, and enforce road closures. I know in many other states if you get stuck after warnings were put up and signs are on saying so, you are responsible.
I've never heard of other states getting cars trapped cause of snowfall as these other towns, states and perhaps people were smart of enough to stay off the road. I was on a phone with someone in New England and they laughed out our LIE story and im sure, they get more snow on an average.
I get the fact that people have to work late or whatever but the employer does have a choice to make, people have a choice to make. I believe things like this where work is lost, etc.., is insurable so is your job really losing money? Or since this is a rare moment in a year, get your people home and safe as they may not make it back to work.
And as for the snow starting earlier then people thought, sadly, you have to change when something occurs and not just say, it was suppose to be later. I really don't see how that's an excuse. Its like telling me, the other car should of turned left but instead, turned into me but i didn't help by trying to avoid it when you "may" of easily turned your car not to get hit.
We all have internet (well most of us), we can check conditions, rate of fall, advisory, news etc..

Well said...and to the point of that the storm started earlier than expected, after reading the reports I thought it was expected to start at 11am.

As for the roads being closed, here is what the governor had to say about it:
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo rejected other suggestions that the highway should have been closed before the storm. "By the weather reports we had, there was no reason for the roads to be closed," he said in a news conference Monday.
This was copied from Newsday.

Not sure about this situation, but I live in NJ and 2 years ago when we got this quantity of snow at Christmas time (it was way worse than LI got that storm) and similar things happened, a few weeks after the state announced that you could file claims for things like that. Maybe something similar will happen.

Maybe if all the cars had pulled over to the shoulder when they felt they couldn't drive anymore it wouldn't have delayed the plowing so much.
I think it's terrible that some employeers did not let their workers leave early when the news started reporting earlier snow. I understand teachers do not have that luxury and I feel terrible.
However I agree with the poseter that I quoted. If you (the general you here) see the weather getting bad, why not pull over to the side?
I've been in terrible winter storms and even rainstorms wehre you can not see the hood of the car and I pulled over to ride it out.
No judging, just curious.

I saw people trying to pull over and getting stuck doing so. I think the roads got bad so fast that people were actually stuck where they were. Tires were spiinning deeper and deeper into it from what I saw. I think a lot of people just got stuck where they were

I followed weather reports pretty diligently, specifically Craig Allen. "Changeover begins toward evening rush." 3PM - "all snow likely all areas by 5 or so. Otherwise, get thee to thy mode of transportation now and safely get there." There was BARELY a dusting at 3pm where I was and even so, I DID leave a few minutes after 3. And it took 2 hours and 35 minutes to go 19.3 miles. You know what happened when people pulled over on the shoulder? They got plowed in by the ONE plow that came in that time frame and that's INCLUDING COP CARS. Well congratufreakinglations that your job gives people the opportunity to work from home. They deserve a freakin' medal. You don't think everyone wanted to stay home? You don't think everyone wanted to leave earlier than they did? Not everyone has the capability to do that. And not to mention, if you worked west and south of Suffolk, you couldn't tell that Suffolk already had that much accumulation because it was raining at 3pm. So bully for you that you have the perfect employer that lets you call in when early reports called for rain until after sunset or let you go home much earlier than everyone else. You are clearly the exception and not the norm.
ETA: And I did stress about leaving even earlier than 3. I came in to work almost 2 hours early so I could leave early but I was almost STUCK at work til 5 because we had clients confirmed. It wasn't until one of the bosses was trying to get here from Queens and he saw the amount of traffic that he said, oh just wait a little while longer to see if they show up. So I waited and waited because I didn't want to get into trouble. And FINALLY they got the sense to call these clients and tell them to not come in.
