I'm crashing and maybe shedding some light. Some kids are ungrateful brats but a lot of kids just don't like a lot of toys. My own son actually enjoys /actively plays with maybe one in every ten things I pick. As he gets older it gets a little easier for me to think like him in the stores but we still have mostly fails. I think in general most playrooms are filled with unused unappreciated stuff. This year for xmas and birthdays i've been giving gift cards to go do something- movies, build a bear, childr

en's museum- that type of stuff. Kids better appreciate an experience than some colorful plastic toy that's like all the toys they already have.

As for clothes, blame that on parents. If they don't wear it it's bc the parents didn't like it. I didn't give a ... what I was wearing until I was 10/11. Honestly, we got a lot of ugly clothes from people this xmas with no receipts. I'll end up donating them. I'll use stuff that's eh for playing etc but things I really don't like I'm not gonna put him in if there's plenty of other choices.

WE don't need any of your 'light ' shed on us. We were all kids once, we were taught to say a proper thank you and be appreciative of anything we got. Kids today are mostly spoiled brats, spoiled by their parents.

If your clothes comment was directed at the pp about the 12 YEAR OLD who tossed the uggs around, how does that jive with your commentary? I'm glad your kids arent getting stuff from me, they'd get coal.

Mushesgirl, Don't try to be logical and reasonable. This woman is obviously unstable, even the parents on the Parenting board are saying as much. It is sad, but she needs help.

Re: Vent: Your gifts to the children in your life...

i find if the child/parents are not appreciated of my gifts i simply give them a celebratory card and then end the gift giving. If you can't be appreciative of me then no gift for you! So far its only happened once but i have to say my niece and nephew were taught to be appreciative no matter what the gift is.

You're right I DON'T have much respect for this board bc of what I see, which ISN'T a bunch of people who don't have kids bsing about their lives etc. but rather actively bashing kids and parents. I think it's sad. It's like you guys have to keep on convincing everyone. Just live your lives.

convincing everyone of what?Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
doesn't the title of this board say something referring to, childless families for different reasons and not to ask why, bc that would be rude...??? i think making a comment like this was waaayyy rude and waaayyy out of line.
if you don't like what is being posted on this board, then why read it? obviously you're not a "childless family" so this isn't going to be your #1 go-to sounding board. you can read and write whatever you like, but making out of line comments like that is just mean-spirited and nasty, regardless of your family's status or what board you are on. you don't know why any one of us is "childless" so to say that any of us are trying to "convince" someone of something or that we are bitter, is just ignorant.
i AM living my life, and take offense to your comment - you're sitting in front of the computer, reading, responding and judging just like the rest of us, so why don't you live YOUR life instead of trying to start drama? everyone passes judgement naturally but to post on here as though you're better than the rest of us? get off your high horse before you catch a nose bleed. ignorant, nasty woman.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

To the OP- yeah, that would make me mad too!

There is really nothing worse than an unappreciative child, or adult, for that matter.

I'm laughing today because on another message board (related to music, not CF folks) someone started a thread this morning to complain about how ungreatful children are when they get gifts.

The person that started the thread is from the UK, so its not just a US thing.

Re: Vent: Your gifts to the children in your life...

Sorry to crash- but as a parent- this is something I struggle with. My daughter is 5 and this year for the first time she was unhappy with the first two gifts we gave her for hannukah. Both of which she did play with, but only after getting upset.

After the second night I got upset and showed her a video of homeless children speaking about their experiences and how lucky she is, not just to have presents, but to have a nice, warm home- food on the table- a good school- and parents that love her. She didn't believe me that people are homeless and live on the street and children that don't have food.

Honestly, at 5- I'm not sure how much of it she "gets" but I keep trying to reinforce these values- even before this incident. We even speak every week about what we are thankful for- and those vary from the family xbox, the Giants, to her parents. But despite these acts, on Hannukah, she got upset about her presents.

I can only hope that by teaching her these values, it will sink in soon. She knows the acts (to say thank you when you receive something, etc...) but it takes a while for some kids to internalize it.

So please understand that a lot of parents of young children are trying to teach their kids the right values and behavior. Its just a process and takes some kids longer to "get it." Yes- there are plenty of parents that don't teach those values. But I like to think that most of us do and are just waiting for the day our kid "gets it."

Sometimes I feel this way too. I should stop buying DH's niece toys, seriously she has soooooo many and so many family members that buy her gifts that it's so overwhelming for her. She got so many gifts for xmas, she didn't open half of them. I played with her with some of her "old" toys and we were playing with a new toy every 5 minutes.

I like practical gifts that children can use for multiple years. Usually for her birthday, since it is 1 month after xmas, I give $$$ Chat Icon

Re: Vent: Your gifts to the children in your life...

I have this with my niece and nephew as well.

We've given gifts, some pretty expensive and barely get a thank you.

I've seen DNephew basically act nasty when we got something he already had, and the kids have LITERALLY said "thanks" and thrown the gift over their shoulder to get it out of the way to continue what they are doing.

NEVER have I see the kids play with anything we got them. When they were born we bought them ID bracelets, gold ones, not at all cheap, and I've NEVER seen the kids wear them, not even to our wedding.

I don't get how these kids act and how SIL can just let it happen. Then again we went to their wedding, I was the photographer, and we gave a gift on top of that and I never got a thank you from them for that either.

It just makes me not want to buy gifts anymore..

But honestly I know adults like this, too
