Using LATCH system when DC is >40lbs.
i thought that once DC reached 40lbs, that you are supposed to use the vehicle belt to secure the carseat to the seat in the vehicle. Well, I was shopping yesterday for a booster for DD (7y.o. and 50lbs), and one of the boosters say that it can be attached to the vehicle using the LATCH system (it says to keep the seat in place so the child can buckle without the booster sliding around. I guess it is still the seatbelt that secures DC and the seat into the vehicle as long as it is buckled properly rather than the LATCH system. Does anybody have any knowledge or opinions on this?

Yes, in that case the seatbelt is doing the work to secure your child in an accident, the latch is just loosely holding the booster in place. It's more for convenience so you don't have to remeber to buckle in an empty booster.
It's perfectly safe and it's an extra convenience feature
Eta; with a regular carseat you should never use both latch and seatbelt, only with these certain boosters that approve it.

All seats. LATCH is only rated for up to 40 lbs. Many booster seats can use the LATCH for higher weights because they use the shoulder strap across DC's chest, and the booster is just to lift them up a few inches. It's not directly involved in retaining them. The LATCH is just used to keep the booster from flying around the car when not in use. Definitely read the manual, though.

It's actually 40 pounds for the child and the seat. And its forty pounds for the set of anchors...not 40 for each one

I wouldn't put any child in a third row personally. No idea what the rules are though. So dangerous in the event of a rear end collision IMO. Those seats are just inches from the bumper arent they?

Thank you. I did not even know that you cannot use the latch beyond 40 lbs. OMG. I have to change my seat asap.

"Parents of many children ages 3 and up who should still be in child-safety seats will be warned not to use a federally required child-seat attachment system when a new rule takes effect in early 2014.
Child seats typically weigh 15 to 33 pounds. So the new rule means some children as light as 32 pounds might not be able to use a system designed to make child seats easier to install and, therefore, safer. This child-seat system is known as LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children)."

The third row of a minivan is much safer than that of an expanded. SUv, you still have all the cargo space in the back.
The third row is just as safe as long as your child is properly restrained, the car seat isn't touching the seat in front of it, and you have a tether point back there if you are using a forward facing carseat.

I've never owned a mini van I thought they were similar to SUV third rows, sorry!! Good to know!
