He is blocked
He will be there for a few days

if he gets blocked again- they would remove it
it's the only way according to my vet
I would get a second opinion before I let anyone do that to him
I just hope that the food didn't have enough time to work to dissolve the crytals- it's only been 3 weeks

ok- the vet called

he just had a few stones that were blocking- they got them out with a catheter
he should be fine after this- they were probably left over from last time

AWWW.. my poor Whiskers had this surgery a year ago (see my avatar pic). He had exactly the same thing you were describing.. couldn't pee, his urethra was blocked. The vet had him on a catheter so he could pee, then they realized that he'd had so many stones pass in the past that it had caused scar tissue to build up in his urethra and that he had to have the surgery to remove it otherwise it would keep getting blocked up and could poison him. The vet told us it was very normal in male cats and they do literally hundreds of these every year. We had it done at the vet hospital in plainview and they were really very good. He was in the hospital for about a week, and when he came home he was stitched from his rear all the way to 1/2 way up his stomach - it was pretty major surgery! Took about 4-5 weeks for him to fully recover. Yes, technically, they do remove his male parts (those that are left once they've been neutered) but it was necessary to help save him. However, he recovered just fine and its been a year and no problems. We're just taking him in this week for his check up.
Anyway, what i wanted to let you know was that i've been through the same experience with one of my cats, and although i was tortured with worry at the time.. it really is a fairly common thing for male cats to go through. Going to the animal ER at midnight is never good, but I wouldn't hesitate getting the surgery if they say he needs it, its just not worth the pain he could be in by having the stones form all the time.. the surgery was very expensive though!!
good luck

Re: Pokey is having trouble peeing again
I agree with otherme, if it becomes an issue have the surgery done. I've heard about it over and over and it seems to be fairly routine for male cats with urethra problems.
Also, just so you know - the S/D food does not make the crystals go away, it helps to prevent new ones from forming by adding liquid to the cat's diet. If you haven't already, you may want to buy one of those water fountain things to encourage Pokey to drink more water. The crystals come from not enough liquid in the diet.

ahhh- thank you
I was going to ask the vet about how to get him to drink more water- I will pick one of those up

Re: UPDATE!Pokey is having trouble peeing again
I really hope he doesn't have any more issues
I feel like it's my fault
I went on this healthy food kick for him and he hated all the healthy wet food I brought home for him - so he was only eating dry food for awhile
so I don't think he was getting enough water
he is on a special diet now- and I picked up the wet food for him today (he really likes it too)
