UPDATE!Pokey is having trouble peeing again
I don't get it
he is on special food to stop crytals from forming
but he keeps going to the litter box and nothing is happening
he seems ok- so I want to wait to take him to my vet in the morning
I am so upset- my vet said it was rare for this to happen again-
UPDATE- he is home
I am putting salt on his food to get him to drink more water
and we are getting him a water fountain
if it happens again- he is going to need his penis removed to pee
he has a very small uretha to begin with - so it doesn't take much to make it clog
I am so glad he is home!

Re: Pokey is having trouble peeing again
the litter box is clean- I just changed it
but the plot thickens
I was just holding him- and pee came out- a small drop
now I am wondering if he is having trouble pooping?
he is eating
I hope he is ok tonight- I really want to take him to my vet in the morning

Re: Pokey is having trouble peeing again
He may need the surgery to expand his urethra. If it keeps happening it means the crystals or mucus keep reforming. Your vet will be able to tell you if he needs the surgery for sure, but I would guess at this point he's going to need it.
Espresso did the same thing with a little pee coming out when you picked him up...it kinda gets stuck.

Re: Pokey is having trouble peeing again
I'm so sorry. Have they been doing regular urine analyses to make sure the crystals aren't forming?
My dog is on Royal Canin Urinary SO - and I know they make one for cats also. (You have a cat, right?)
She had bladder stones that are caused by the crystals in the urine. She went on one diet when she actually had the stones - and stayed on that for maybe 2 months and it cleared up the stones, but she still had crystals in her urine. Now she's on the Royal Canin Urinary SO diet - and probably has to stay on that for good because she is prone to crystals which can lead to bladder stones.

Re: Pokey is having trouble peeing again
I might have to take him to the vet tonight
I really don't want to
I really want to take him to my vet
but I am so nervous that I am causing him more discomfort
I don't want him to die
he is moving around, he was eating before- I think he is just uncomfortable
I wish my vet was open right now- I don't know what to do

Re: Pokey is having trouble peeing again
Ugh, Beth, if you're really that concerned I would take him to the e-vet.
Is there another one near by that you can take him to since you don't really care for the one you went to last time?
Hang in there...

Re: Pokey is having trouble peeing again
I know you said you weren't happy with the ER vet the last time, and I don't want to scare you, but I wouldn't wait if he isn't peeing. My mom has a cat that had crystals form and the vet told her that if she hadn't brought him in he could have had kidney failure from not being able to go. He had to have minor surgery to correct the problem and was at the vet for about 3 days after. Also, to help prevent them from forming in the future, she stopped using litter and lines his box with paper towels now. He hasn't had a problem since then. HTH and for Pokey.

I live in Bayside- I went to the one in westbury with him last month
it's one of the 2 my vet recommends
he seems ok now- he is cleaning his paws, sitting next to me
I am so confused

I don't know much about cats, but something obviously
doesn't seem right. Does he seem uncomfortable?

Re: Pokey is having trouble peeing again
Is he peeing at all? Even a little bit? If so, it could be a UTI. When my cat has one she keeps going to the literbox and peeing a drop..orjust peeing a drop on the floor here and there. I know you said he has a history of stones, crystals etc but is it possible that this time it's just a UTII? Either way he'll need to go to the vet, but if he is at least passing some urine you can probably wait until morning to go to your own vet...

Re: Pokey is having trouble peeing again
we had a few drops of pee before
on me no less
but I didn't care
so something is able to pass
it could be a UTI again

Re: Pokey is having trouble peeing again
Then I'd say to keep an eye on him and as long as he is passing something I would probably wait till morning to see my own vet. Good luck- I know how scary it is...I'm an emotional basket case when my baby is sick so I know the feeling...

Re: Pokey is having trouble peeing again
thanks
I am sitting next to him- he is not allowed out of my site
he is sleeping and grooming himself
acting very normal and cute
I hope he stays this way and that waiting till the morning is the right call
my vet is just so much better and I feel more comfortable with him- since this seems to be an on going issue

And I just have to say that you have one lucky cat Beth! I remember when you were considering getting him, and you weren't really a cat person and you were unsure if you'd even like having a cat - but you said you'd give it a try. And you have turned into an amazing cat owner! Those cats have it made!

there was a time when I didn't want him in my bedroom
now he MUST sleep in bed with me
I would do anything for him (and Maggie too)

Re: Pokey is having trouble peeing again
sorry this is happening again.
They will not go toxic overnight. You should be ok to take him in the morning. He sounds like he is doing ok. If he was lathargic, I would say don't wait.
IMO, taking him to your vet that you trust in the am is a better option.
Hope you wake up to him peeing again
