UPDATE to Prayers for Jenny - She's gone
UPDATE: We just got back from the Vet - her numbers were horrible, SEVERE Kidney failure - worst the doctor said he's ever seen. We didn't want her to suffer or die incidentally in a cage alone at the Vet and he told us even if we tried to hospitalize her for the next 5 days she could continue to deteriorate in fact he felt there was no reversing the damage, if anything we'd buy a few months, but she could die while hospitalized and there's no one with her at night... we wanted our voices to be the last she heard and comfort her. We chose to stay with her during the process... he sedated her and we said our goodbyes again and then he gave the euthanization. Her veins were so small and collapsed from the dehydration they had to put in a catheter. This S*CKS! We have 4 other rescued cats, a bird and a baby and still - there's clearly a lull in the house... someone's missing. DH and I have just been crying and crying. Jenny was a gift to me from him. Now, may our little baby girl Jenny-poo rest in peace...
We rescued Jenny back in 2003. Story short - DH's cousin does animal rescue and we wanted a black cat (I think they're pretty), but declawed b/c our other 2 came to us as rescues declawed and we didn't want a cat fight to turn disasterous. Well, he came home one day after seeing his cousin with a cat (not a kitten is all we know age wise). She was EXTREMELY skiddish. Her story goes that she was left in an abandoned apartment in Hicksville with no food, water or heat in January. It took lots of love and patience, but today she's very affectionate, but as a stranger if you came to my house - she'd run and hide. Probably abused - it was VERY hard, I mean painfully (litterally) at times with Jenny - but so worth the experience of having her in our lives. When I say literally - I had to cease bringing her for well Vet visits b/c she scratched me so bad and so deep a few times with her back claws, I got infections and was on a mix of antibiotics. Still - so worth saving her. A lot of people would not have taken her and we know that. She's not a lap cat, you can't pick her up, in fact in the early years she'd hide for us - took almost a year before we could pet her. While I was pregnant she would sit next to me and purr and just want to be pet. Quite a difference and so very worth it.
She's always been a thin cat... recently of our 5 she has become VERY thin, but we have another black cat who's quite fat. Well, the other day we noticed her usual craving for water from the fridge has become an obsession, she jumps on the kitchen counter (a known no-no among our cats) and is now crying at the toilet bowl. I've found her twice this evening crying up at the counter, yet she's too weak to move. We are guessing - kidney failure? We were supposed to take her to the Vet tomorrow, but we just called to squeeze her in for tonight. She wasn't crying when I made the appt. Now she is. She's so weak I could easily pick her up. She's not fighting like she used to.
We are praying she's okay. One thing we are both very bad at is the "big decision". We want her to be comfortable and happy - clearly she's not. Prayers for Jenny please!
UPDATE: We went to the Vet. They think it's either diabetes, thyroid or kidney disease/failure. They took blood and stuck a needle into her bladder to extract urine. They gave her shots of antibiotic, B12, a shot of Pepsid and fluids... she was SEVERELY dehydrated despite the obsession with water... doc said her veins were so small. She weighs - are you ready for this - 5.6 pounds!!! Last time I was able to get her there was 2005 and she weighed 11 pounds. I mean she's the opposite of my fat cat Rocky who is more than triple her weight. We are so scared for Jenny - we will get the test results back tomorrow. Poor thing is so weak. Our litter boxes are in the basement and we know that cats usually won't poop where they eat and we have 4 others who will be mad - so I took a waterproof disposable bed liner and laid it on the floor of my kitchen where Jenny won't move from. I put a folded baby blanket (don't worry - won't use it for the baby afterward) on top of it. I tried to pick her up (which I CANNOT believe she is letting me do without scratching my face off) and put her on it - she just wobbled away. Then I'm cleaning up in the dining room and I hear her "meowish cry" and I went in the kitchen and there she was - nestling into the blanket. She's in between the food and the water fountain (we have a tiny kitchen). I feel SO BAD for her. I hope she's not in pain, but I have a really bad feeling she is. I've never seen her like this... she's in a tight ball with her head looking toward the floor. My others keep going up to her and sniffing her - one cat (my eldest siamese) hissed at her... and the others RAN away from her. I wonder if they all know something. This totally SUCKS! We've only had her for 5 years... cats are supposed to be so much stealthier than dogs - why is this happening. I couldn't deal when I lost my last Golden Retriever so I swore off dogs b/c of the short life expectancy of the breeds I like. I hate this. Meanwhile, DD (4 months), DH and I are all sick with respiratory stuff. I was home today b/c I wasn't feeling well and not sure if I should go in tomorrow - what if I get bad news - which I know there's SOMETHING wrong with Jenny... it's just a matter of what and how much time we have. Per the Vet I gave her some babyfood (turkey), she ate a really small amount - we blocked off the other cats so she could eat in piece. Dh also put some chilled water from the fridge in a cup and she sipped a little. Not nearly enough food or water for her to survive.
We'll have more news tomorrow. Thanks for listening to all that read all this.

We knew it was time to attempt a Vet visit... but I think it's too late. I made her comfortable in the kitchen... she can't make the stairs for the litter box... I hate to say it, but I'll be surprised if she's still "with us" by the morning. We just tried to put the "kitty house" by her - she wanted to go in, but her back legs are giving out. I don't know what to do!

It seems like you are doing the best you can. Just speak softly to her and let he know it's ok. Is there a 24 hr vet clinic you could take her to in order to get a faster response or at least get her on IV's. Do you have a medicine dropper you could give her fluids if she can't drink for herself? Check on her frequently if you can if she is having a hard time moving.
I'm so sorry

I just want her comfortable. If this is the end... I wanted her days to be happy and comfy... that's a huge reason for us to have done rescue of a hard to adopt animal and this is clearly not comfy. I'd hate to have to be the one to say euthanize, but I can't stand watching this either. I have no idea what to do for her right now. I really think the Vet should have kept her there with an IV of fluids. She can't even get into the litter box! I know this is a bad sign and I suck at the goodbyes!
