It has happened to me and I just paid the travel expenses. I would take the LIRR because my time is worth more than the savings. I would not take money from my boss if I knew they were paying it out of pocket. As for the metro cards for the patients they are likely paid for with city or state funding and have to be accounted for and are not intended for staff use.

I agree. Maybe you can get the money back at tax time?

You would get to deduct the expense, not a credit. So $28 divided by whatever your effective tax bracket is. If you are 20% bracket then $5.60 at tax time.

Our policy is that travel would be paid for, minus whatever we normally pay to travel (they would calculate miles from my house to my office and then calculate driving allowance and then subtract that from train price.)
That is official policy, I just submit the whole expense and they approve it without issues.
If they said they are not going to reimburse you at all, it stinks but I wouldn't ask my boss to pay or push on it. I'd just consider it a work cost that I have to pay to commute. After all, you are getting something out of it that you could use somewhere else.

I did not ask her t pay she offered.
I also want to clarify, we are not state funded in anyway this is a private company and we purchase the metro cards from what I know.

No, don't accept it. You have been very lucky if it has been the norm to be reimbursed for travel expenses.

From reading your original post, she probably only offered because you brought it up a second time. So she may think its easier to just pay you the money then talk about it more.

I would never take the money from my boss.
Is this a new policy since you were hired that they don't reimburse? If not I wouldn't be irritated since I accepted the position knowing the policy.

I want to edit one more thing, she is my director but I consider her my boss.
I was never told I would even have to travel for any trainings. This company makes up rules and changes them all the time.
I never thought they would send me for a training, since most of out trainings are in service where presenters come to use.

I brought it up today only because during supervision last week she mentioned it to me as a possibility but never gave a definite answer. When I asked her today I was just checking if she had an answer. I like her a lot but She has a tendency to avoid topics or issues.

I agree that the comment sounds passive aggressive--your director is offering to pay for your travel so she does not have to listen to you complain that you have to attend a training seminar and pay your own expenses to commute to a work mandated training.

Re: ok, need some thoughts on this topic regarding work
Is it a work related training solely for this job, or could you potentially apply it to another agency/position elsewhere?
I'd probably suck it up.
Every so often I go to meetings out of my office and I don't ask to be reimbursed because it rarely happens and there's actually positives to being out

I agree. Plus it seems like you're annoyed they are sending you for a training... It may be inconvenient but it's to help you.

Im not sure how to take this. I was not complaining about going to the training, but rather trying to find out if the company will reimburse for my travel. I am still going but I do believe strongly when a place of business tells you, you have to go, and I would not take this class on my own, they should reimburse. All my other agencies in the past did that.

I'm Not sure how a thought or question automatically makes a person sound annoyed about a situation.

I do not know exactly what your dynamic with your director is but it sounds like she is offering to pay for your travel because she anticipates if she tells you the company will not pay for it you will become upset- based on this post she is/was correct. Sometimes work requires you to commute to a different locations and you just have to do it. You are lucky you have always been reimbursed because this is not always the case. I had to pay for my own travel as an employee and even as a graduate student a few times--it is a catch 22--the training is required so you just go and that is that--a lot of things that were standard in the past seem to be disappearing- I guess it is one way for companies to keep costs down.

This.
I teach in the field, and have planned lots of "field trips" for my students this semester.
They would never be reimbursed. It's part of the territory.
I also don't remember specifics, but I know you've come on here before to vent about this job, things they don't reimburse for or have screwed up financially.
Could be the higher up is just in the know this is a sore subject for you?
