Unsanitary or no big deal? a question with poll
Please answer the poll. Is it unsanitary to take a clean food knife, use it to open boxes (not food boxes), mail, etc, then put it back to be used to cut food, without having washed it?

Its kind of the same concept as having separate kitchen scissors and regular scissors. I'd never use my regular scissors on food.

YES! This is me too. I have a "food scissors" where I open food items and a regular scissor that i use to open anything not food related.

I would think it should be cleaned with soap and water
Though I have poked a hole in my water jug with a knife and just rinsed it off (no soap) and put it back

Probably not the best thing to do. I usually do it to cut open a food package and then either use the knife for whatever I am preparing or maybe put it back in the drawer (if no food got on it). For mail or other packages - in those cases, I would probably put the knife in the dishwasher

For packages I generally stick the knife back in the block. If a knife touches anything food related it goes in the dishwasher. Never thought about this before!!!

Re: Unsanitary or no big deal? a question with poll
Ok so far, I see most agree with my thoughts. My parents (especially my father) have a bad habit of doing this. Skeeves me and pisses me off when they do this in my house. Because I am not ok with this and then if I did not see them do it, I would use unknowingly this knife to cut our food. Not cool IMO. It's called washing a knife that you just cut non food items with.
That's what scissors are for (and not my food scissors). Wanted to be sure I was not being overly particular.

Definitely unsanitary. We have a separate drawer with scissors and a letter opener. Usually don't use the food scissors for packages.

No not my husband. He would never. My father. Gets me so annoyed, esp when it does it in my house with my things.

Probably unsanitary, but the odds of the knife picking up germs that make you sick are most likely slim. I'd rate it a eewwww, that's gross kind of thing.
Not something I would do, I have kitchen scissors for food and regular scissors for everything else.

we change ours often (they skeeve DH out)
he also makes us have one we only can use for the kids/our cups and one we use for other dishes.
We don't use the sponges to wipe down our counters either (we either use clorox/lysol wipes I keep near the sink or paper towel with cleaning solution or both)
if I feel the sponge needs a good sanitizing before replacing it I will throw it in the microwave.

I absolutely hate sponges! I use a dish brush and run it through our dishwasher with the other dirty dishes.

I'd wash it first. Going right from opening mail to cutting food sounds gross to me.

I'm sure most people can handle it, I've done it too. I don't use a bath sponge, but I do change my kitchen sponge every 2 weeks...they usually don't last me much longer than that, I am very hard on my sponges. LOL!
